Williams announce Alex Albon multi-year contract extension

Written by Jacob Awcock, Edited by Owen Bradley

Williams have announced that Alex Albon has committed his future to the team by signing a multi-year contract extension with the British team.

Having impressed throughout the previous season and the start of this season, rumours had circulated that he was set for a return to Red Bull to replace Sergio Perez, whose lacklustre campaign last year had left Christian Horner and Dr Helmut Marko contemplating who to partner Verstappen for next year.

But despite a point-less start to this season, the London born Thai driver has kept faith in the team claiming he is “incredibly happy to be remaining with Williams Racing." He also added that he was staying for the “long-term project” that was underway which Williams team principal James Vowles has mentioned before, claiming that Albon would be an integral part to the plan.

Vowles also spoke highly of Albon claiming that he has “exceptional talent and technical input” as well as claiming that Albon’s signature is a “vote of confidence” for the team and is “a big piece of the puzzle in moving the team up the grid”.

Albon signed with Williams in 2022 following a year out as Red Bull’s reserve driver, as well as a full DTM campaign. He has since accumulated 31 points in fairly below average cars. Standout drives have been his phenomenal performance in Canada 2023 managing to hold off a host of faster cars to secure Williams’ best finish in two years: seventh place.

With Albon locked in for the foreseeable future, the focus will now shift to who will partner him at Williams. Teammate Logan Sargeant has been under pressure for some time now, with young Kimi Antonelli waiting in the wings for his super licence to be approved, time seems to be of essence for the American, if he wants to stay in Formula One with Williams.

Alex took to the William’s social media saying:

“It has been a difficult start to the year but since joining Williams we have made significant progress together and I have seen the huge changes happening behind the scenes to take us back to the front of the grid.

“This is a long-term project that I really believe in and want to play a key role in which is why I have signed a multi-year contract.

“The journey will take time but I am confident we are building the right team to move forward and achieve great things in the years to come”
