Seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton admits Sebastian Vettel would be an “amazing option” as his own replacement at Mercedes, as the British driver prepares for Ferrari move.
36-year old, and former four-time F1 world champion Vettel told Sky Sports F1 that he was “potentially” in for a 2025 comeback, while also speaking to Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff.
Amidst all this, Hamilton spoke on the potential replacement for his Mercedes seat in 2025, with Ferrari next on the horizon for the British driver.
“I would love for Seb to come back and I think he would be an amazing option for the team,” Hamilton said.
Hamilton had previously described Vettel as his all-time favourite rival during their time shared on track together, the German driver finishing second to Hamilton in the driver’s championship in 2017 and 2018, before his eventual retirement from the sport in 2022.
Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate George Russell also spoke on the matter, claiming it would be great to see Vettel back on track in any regard.
“Sebastian’s a great person,” Russell added. “For sure his personality is missed on the grid, and I think it’s important that we have the best 20 drivers in the world all competing for race wins and championships.”
“I’m really happy and open to have anybody as my team mate, whether it’s a world champion or a rookie, it doesn’t change how I go about my business,” the King’s Lynn native concluded.
With the shock announcement of Hamilton joining Ferrari for the 2025 Formula One season, a comeback from four-time champion Vettel could very well be the next big thing. Only time can tell.
