Downforce: What is it?

Just clearing up a minor point, downforce does not minimise drag. The two thing co-exist together in a partnership - more downforce = more drag. Less downforce = less drag. This is due to the way downforce is created - so turning the surface of the cars wing into the airstream will produce the downwards force (downforce) that your looking for. With the wing hitting the oncoming airflow at an angle the vehicle has to move through this air with the wing elements and in fact all its physical properties - this creates drag. Ground effect led downforce, as in under the vehicle, probably exhibits less obvious drag but in achieving this the airflow will still to an extent b…
