The event will be broadcast on November 14th on the eve of the first ever Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix, starring Alex Albon, Carlos Sainz, Lando Norris, Pierre Gasly and four pro golfers.
Netflix is looking to promote sports even further on its platform, and it shows. This time, the streaming giant is betting on a competition involving a cross-over of its most popular sports series: Formula 1: Drive to Survive, and Full Swing.
Teeing off on November 14th, at 3 PM Pacific time and 6 PM Eastern Time, four Formula 1 Drivers will pair up with four PGA (Professional Golfers Association) Tour players to compete in a golf tournament. The event will take place at the Wynn Golf Club, near the Las Vegas strip, also the location of the inaugural F1 Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix.
The rules are simple. Athletes will be divided into four pairs, with one athlete from each sport per team playing an eight-hole match. The top two teams will advance to the final hole, until the winners of the last hole are determined, and will take home the Netflix cup title.
The competition produced by Excel Sports Management is the first-ever live sports event streamed by Netflix, and features some of the best audiences too. Golf representatives would be the American quartet of Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa, and Justin Thomas; while the excellent driver-golfers Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, Mclaren’s Lando Norris, William’s Alex Albon will, as expected, turn up for F1, accompanied by Alpine’s Pierre Gasly, whose golf skills are still unknown.
“We love to see how our sports series have brought increased fandom to sports leagues and competitions all over the world. (…) The Netflix Cup will take that energy to the next level with global stars from two popular hits competing in our first-ever live sports event”, said Gabe Spitzer, Vice President of nonfiction Sports at Netflix in a press release.
There is no doubt Formula One: Drive to Survive not only boosted US fans' interest in Formula One, but also reached a whole new audience. The F1 docuseries turned out to be a huge success among viewers of young age, as well as sports fans all over the world, who were seeking sports content during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The success that followed led Netflix to launch other sports content, like the Full Swing docuseries, chronicling the lives of PGA Tour players, or even “Break point” a documentary about Tennis competitions, going behind-the-scenes of tennis player’s lives.
Moreover, most F1 drivers are known to play and appreciate golf. Like Carlos Sainz who took part in the celebrity All-Star event prior to the Ryder Cup in Rome, Italy, in early October, or Alex Albon, who dates a professional golfer. Hence, it’s not surprising to see this collaboration between the two Netflix originals, as the streamers first live event.
And if you think Netflix will slow down on Formula 1 content, you are wrong.
The streaming platform announced the launch of F1 legend Ayrton Senna’s mini-series entitled “SENNA”. The cast is already out, and it will be Brazilian actor Gabriel Leone to impersonate Senna, in a Gullane production, with active participation of the driver’s family. The show will also count on Brazilian filmmaker Vicente Amorim as Showrunner, who will also direct the series alongside Julia Rezende.
“SENNA” will be composed of six episodes, and fans will have the opportunity to know in depth the three-time F1 world champion’s career and personal life. According to Netflix, the show “Will reveal the personality and personal relationships of the three-time F1 champion, showing the trajectory of his triumphs, disappointments, joys and sorrows.
It begins in the early days of Ayrton's motorsport career, when he moves to England to compete in the Ford Formula, concluding with the tragic accident in Imola, Italy, during the San Marino Grand Prix”.
The launch date is still unknown, but we are thrilled to know more about the series of such a motorsport legend. Keep in touch to stay updated!
