Günther "looking forward to" Formula E's GEN4 era, amidst seat speculation

Max Günther has revealed that he is looking forward to Formula E's upcoming GEN4 era, amidst speculation about the German's seat for next season, with the 29-year old leaving DS Penske at the end of this season.
Günther will depart from DS Penske at the end of the Formula E season, ahead of the drastic GEN4 changes to the cars in Formula E. Speaking to journalists, including DIVEBOMB's Owen Bradley, Günther reflected on the overall GEN3 era, and spoke about his ultimate career goal of becoming Formula E World Champion.
Günther has endured a relatively difficult 2025/26 Formula E championship campaign, with a best result of sixth place at the season opener in Brazil and Sanya. The German currently sits 18th in the championship standings, with just 23 points to his name.
Going into next season, there has been some speculation that Günther may join Envision Racing, with many rumours suggesting that the German will remain on the grid for the 2026/27 season.
Asked about his experience with DS Penske, Günther stated: "Obviously DS leaving Formula E is quite emotional for many of us. Certainly for me, it has been a proud moment to be part of DS's history — adding more wins and more pole positions to their record in Formula E has been truly special. They achieved so much, winning multiple world championships and building a great history. We're running a special gold livery with our car this weekend, and we'll try to finish in style."
Günther has been with DS Penske for two seasons, and managed two victories with the squad during his debut season with the team. However, a tumultuous second season, matched with DS Penske leaving Formula E, sees Günther without a drive for next year.
The German has won several races in Formula E, and frequently challenges for podium places. The 29-year old has emerged as a rising talent throughout the championship, and has driven for several teams during his tenure in the sport, such as: Geox Dragon, BMW i Andretti, Maserati and now DS Penske.
Günther has enjoyed success in the GEN3 era, claiming four victories overall, and eight podium finishes. The London E-Prix will be the final outing for the GEN3 cars, before the fast and furious GEN4 cars take to the track for the 2026/27 season, beginning in December.
Speaking to DIVEBOMB about the GEN3 era, Günther stated: "The GEN3 era overall has been pretty good for me — I've won four races and had quite a few podiums, with great moments both at Maserati and here at DS. This season in particular has been a tough one: the package, especially on the efficiency side, left us compromised in the races.
He added: "Weekend by weekend we really extracted the best from the car over one lap, and credit to the team for that, but the races were much more complicated for us — we didn't score the points we wanted to. The reasons are clear; we tried to maximise everything we could. That's part of racing — sometimes you're in a position to fight for the championship, sometimes you're not. This year was a little different, but I'm standing here with absolutely zero regrets, and I just want to give it everything in these final races."
Despite winning several races in the GEN3 era, as well as taking wins in the GEN2 era too, a championship victory has eluded Günther, with the German's best championship result being 7th place during the 2022/23 season with Maserati.
The GEN3 era has been controversial among drivers and fans, especially coming from the popular GEN2 cars. The GEN4 car's appearance looks like a proper aggressive racing car, boasting a 200mph top speed, which it may hit on multiple circuits next season. The noise and attention surrounding GEN4 is much more positive compared to the previous generation.
Speaking to DIVEBOMB about his ultimate career goal and the upcoming GEN4 era, Günther revealed: "In a racing career you go through different steps — you turn professional, you want your
first podium, then your first win, and it progresses naturally from there. Where I am now, I've
won many races and podiums, so ultimately my goal is to win a world championship here in
Formula E — that's definitely my ambition for the future.
He continued: "It's a very competitive series, and I know you need the right environment around you, with everything aligned. It's a privilege to compete here, and even a single race win means a lot to all of us, because the competition is so incredibly high. So yes, that's the ultimate goal."
The GEN4 era promises exciting racing. With the end of this season seeing nine different drivers in contention of winning the world champion, and four of those drivers in with a realistic shot of taking the title, the competitivity of the championship has never been an issue, rather the cars themselves.
When asked, by DIVEBOMB, if the GEN4 era will allow him to achieve his championship goal, Günther stated: "Yeah, obviously the new car is amazing — the performance and everything that goes into
its complexity is impressive for the championship going forward. I'm really looking forward to
the new era as much as I am to closing out this season on a high. GEN4 is going to be
great, though it will also depend on where you land in the competitive order and whether
you're in the right car — that's always hard to predict in advance, but I'm massively looking forward to it."
With Günther saying "I'm massively looking forward to" the GEN4 era, this suggests that the German may very well have found a seat for the 2026/27 season, although it is currently unclear which team he will be racing with.
Günther is back on track this weekend representing DS Penske at the London E-Prix in their final race in Formula E, where the team celebrate their last race with a new gold-designed livery. The first race of the double header gets underway Saturday 15th August at 15:05 local time.
