Oscar Piastri’s 2026 season: bad luck, bad strategy or a genuine pace deficit?

McLaren’s 2026 campaign has been defined by reliability concerns, strategic miscalculations and a car that has struggled to replicate the dominance of its predecessors. For Oscar Piastri, however, the question is more complicated: how much of his 55-point deficit to Lando Norris has been created by the team, and how much by the Australian himself?
For Oscar Piastri, 2026 was supposed to be the season of consolidation. After finishing third in the 2025 Drivers’ Championship, winning seven Grands Prix and spending the season fighting for the title, Piastri entered Formula One’s new regulatory era with an established reputation as one of the grid’s most complete young drivers. His reputation was built not only on outright pace, but on his strong racecraft, improving qualifying performance, tyre management, consistency and ability to remain composed under pressure. By the end of 2025, Piastri had developed into a driver capable of performing across a range of conditions, with relatively few obvious weaknesses. However, after the Dutch Grand Prix, he sits seventh in the Drivers’ Championship on 104 points, while his team mate Lando Norris sits fourth on 159.
That 55-point gap is significant, but the championship table alone does not explain it. Piastri’s campaign has been interrupted by two consecutive Did Not Start (DNS), mechanical failures, strategic gambles, and a car that has not always provided the aerodynamic platform McLaren enjoyed under the previous regulations. At the same time, however, Norris has repeatedly extracted more from the same MCL40 when the margins have been smallest. That makes Piastri’s season less a story of one thing going wrong and more so a question of where responsibility lies. McLaren have undoubtedly cost Piastri points, but Piastri has also left points on the table.
A season compromised before it began

The first two Grands Prix immediately distorted Piastri’s championship campaign. At Albert Park, the Australian crashed on the reconnaissance lap and was unable to take the start. While that incident was self-inflicted, China was entirely different. After qualifying P5 for the Sprint weekend, Piastri was unable to start the Grand Prix after an electrical problem struck his MCL40. McLaren ultimately failed to get either car onto the grid, leaving the team with a double DNS and no opportunity to score Grand Prix points. F1 later confirmed that both problems were linked to the same electrical-side power-unit component.
For Piastri, that meant two consecutive rounds without a Grand Prix start. Andrea Stella acknowledged the psychological and competitive impact, saying, “If we consider that Oscar has not been able to start a race in this start of the 2026 campaign, that's pretty difficult for Oscar to process.” The significance was not merely the points lost. A driver needs track time to understand a new car, particularly when the technical regulations have fundamentally changed the way it generates performance. With active aerodynamics, increased electrical deployment and a substantially different aerodynamic philosophy, the MCL40 represented a new challenge even for drivers who had already mastered McLaren’s previous generation of machinery. Piastri, therefore, began his campaign with a deficit that had little to do with his underlying pace. When he finally had a clean opportunity, he immediately demonstrated what remained underneath, with P2 in Japan followed by P3 in Miami. The speed was there; the consistency was not.
The MCL40 changed the equation

This is where Piastri’s season needs to be separated from McLaren’s broader decline. As DIVEBOMB’s mid-season review noted, McLaren entered 2026 attempting to transfer two years of development knowledge into a radically different regulatory environment. The MCL40 carried the expectations of a back-to-back Constructors’ Championship-winning operation, but its predecessors’ strengths did not automatically transfer into the new regulations. The team struggled with downforce, tyre behaviour and reliability while trying to understand its new aerodynamic platform.
For a driver, that matters. A car with a narrow operating window demands greater precision from the setup direction, while a reduction in aerodynamic load changes braking stability and corner entry. Different tyre characteristics alter how aggressively a driver can attack a stint, and when the field is separated by tenths rather than seconds, a driver’s ability to extract the final percentage from the car becomes critical. This is where Norris has increasingly separated himself from Piastri.
Formula One’s own mid-season comparison had Norris ahead 7–4 in Grand Prix qualifying, while the pair were level 5–5 on race finishes before summer break. The qualifying statistic is particularly important because race results can be distorted by Safety Cars, pit windows and tyre degradation. Qualifying is a much cleaner comparison of how effectively two drivers can extract performance from the same package, and Norris was consistently getting more from it.
Canada: When the pit wall overruled the driver

If there is one race that most clearly demonstrates McLaren’s role in Piastri’s season, it is Canada. The weather created a difficult strategic problem before the race even began, with McLaren electing to start both cars on the intermediate compound as the team believed the wet conditions could persist long enough for the tyre to become advantageous. Piastri initially supported the decision, saying, “It was a group call. I was one of the people that said yes to the intermediates.”
That context matters. McLaren did not make the original call without input from its drivers. Piastri believed the intermediates could be faster if they could be brought into temperature. However, the situation changed rapidly. The rain stopped, the additional formation laps further dried the racing line and the intermediate tyre moved outside its optimal operating window. Piastri then began questioning the call.
That detail is crucial. The original intermediate-tyre call was not simply imposed upon Piastri; he had supported the decision based on the conditions they expected. However, during the formation lap, both McLaren drivers reported that the track was already drier than anticipated. By that point, though, it was too late to change tyres before the start. The issue was less about Piastri identifying the wrong strategy and more about McLaren being unable to react once the conditions evolved differently from their expectations. Piastri’s Lap 1 stop ultimately became costly. Switching to slicks so early meant he rejoined behind the pack and had to spend much of the race recovering lost ground. While the decision corrected McLaren’s initial tyre misjudgement, the damage to Piastri’s track position was already done, leaving him unable to compete at the front and contributing to his eventual 11th-place finish.
The Canadian Grand Prix provides a useful distinction between strategy selection and strategy adaptation. The initial call can be defended, but the failure to react to the changing track conditions is considerably harder to defend. McLaren failed to do that quickly enough, and Piastri paid the price.
Strategy cannot explain a 55-point deficit

Canada strengthens the case against McLaren, but it does not close the case. Norris is operating within the same strategic environment. The two drivers share the same engineering philosophy, power-unit architecture, aerodynamic package and tyre allocation. When McLaren get a strategy call wrong, both drivers can suffer. The question is whether Piastri has been affected by the team’s mistakes, or Norris has simply been better at minimising the damage. The evidence points towards both.
Norris has also experienced major reliability setbacks. He failed to finish in Canada and Monaco due to separate mechanical problems, while the double DNS in China affected both drivers. F1’s mid-season review recorded reliability as one of McLaren’s defining weaknesses of the first half of the campaign. Piastri, therefore, cannot claim a unique relationship with bad luck. What is unique is how often his compromised weekends have prevented him from building momentum.
Piastri’s own assessment is telling
Piastri has not attempted to blame the season so far on McLaren. At the halfway point of the campaign, the Australian admitted that his season had contained “probably more lows than highs.” More significantly, he identified consistency as an area for improvement, saying, “I want to be able to improve and be a bit more consistently on top of my game.”
That is arguably the most important admission in assessing his season. Piastri understands that the issue is not simply whether he has the raw speed to beat Norris. The issue is whether he can repeatedly access it. That distinction is crucial in a championship fight. A driver can be the fastest on a particular weekend and still lose a championship if another driver is more consistently able to extract the car’s performance across the season.
For Piastri, the challenge has been getting the MCL40 into that window, and keeping it there.
Hungary: the weekend that proves both arguments

The Hungarian Grand Prix provides perhaps the clearest case study of Piastri’s season as almost every variable was present. Piastri started P3 and immediately took the lead from Norris. For the first stint, his race pace was strong enough to control the Grand Prix, with the MCL40 finally demonstrating the high-speed and medium-speed corner performance McLaren had been chasing through its upgrades. Piastri was managing the tyre degradation effectively, had track position and the opportunity to win.
Then the pit-window calculations began to matter. McLaren brought Piastri in earlier during the second round of stops to cover the undercut threat from Lewis Hamilton, despite Norris having asked to pit first. The team maintained its papaya rules, giving pit priority to the driver ahead, while Piastri was also struggling with his tyres. The decision reflected both the threat from Hamilton and McLaren’s commitment to prioritising the leading car. The difference was not simply that McLaren preferred one driver; the strategy was based on the relative threats around each car and the difficulty of overtaking at the Hungaroring. Stella defended the decision, explaining that McLaren needed to cover Hamilton because surrendering track position at the circuit carried significant consequences.
The decision placed Piastri back into traffic. He then encountered Carlos Sainz while attempting to navigate the Williams, with contact costing further time. 14 laps from the chequered flag, a gearbox failure ended his race, while Norris went on to win and Piastri scored zero points. The race is impossible to categorise as simply a strategy failure. Piastri had demonstrated enough race pace to take the lead, McLaren’s pit-window decision complicated his race, traffic further compromised him and a mechanical failure ended it. Norris, crucially, demonstrated the race pace required to keep the alternative strategy viable.
That last point matters. When Norris was released into clean air, his race pace increased dramatically. McLaren’s strategy did not create that performance. Norris did.
Zandvoort: The question changes

The Dutch Grand Prix was where the balance of the argument shifted. Piastri’s qualifying performance was encouraging. He took fourth in Q3 with a 1:11.305, just 0.142 seconds away from Norris’ pole position time. F1 reported that Piastri had looked like the fastest driver on track for much of qualifying, but could not quite extract the same performance as Norris on the final runs.
That is significant. The problem emerged over the race distance. After the red flag, Piastri made an excellent move on George Russell to move into third while running the harder compound and was initially able to maintain competitive race pace. A slow stop then dropped Piastri behind Russell and removed his track-position advantage. F1 identified the pit stop as a significant operational problem for Piastri’s afternoon.
However, that was not the whole story. Once Piastri was back on track, his race pace fell away, particularly from the second stint onwards. The issue appeared to be tyre performance, with Piastri struggling to maintain the pace he had shown earlier in the race as the tyres degraded. He finished P6. Norris won. And the gap was not simply created by the pit stop. Piastri himself identified the fundamental issue, commenting, “The first stint felt reasonable, but from the second stint onwards, the pace was simply not there, and it became a real struggle.”
He continued: “A slow pit stop didn't help, but the fundamental issue was the lack of pace.”
That is an extraordinarily important distinction. Piastri himself separated the operational error from the performance deficit. The pit stop cost track position. The lack of pace cost the race.
When asked why, he admitted that he did not yet have the answer.
That is where the strategy argument reaches its limit.
The technical question: Where is Piastri losing the performance?

This is the question McLaren now has to answer. If two drivers are running fundamentally the same aerodynamic specification and power-unit deployment profile, a significant race-pace divergence demands investigation. Is Piastri losing time in the braking phase? Is he unable to maintain the optimum tyre temperature window over a long stint? Or is Norris simply more comfortable exploiting the car’s peak performance at the limit?
Zandvoort does not provide a definitive answer, but it does narrow the possibilities. The close qualifying margin suggests that Piastri’s underlying speed is not the primary concern; instead, the more significant question is why that speed did not translate into the same race result. Combined with the earlier evidence from the season, Zandvoort strengthens the case that Piastri’s 2026 difficulties are more complex than a simple lack of pace. The challenge now is determining whether the inconsistency is coming from the car, the setup, tyre behaviour, or Piastri’s ability to extract performance over a full race distance.

This is where the comparison with Norris becomes unavoidable. The MCL40 is not an easy car. DIVEBOMB’s own mid-season review identified McLaren’s downforce deficit, tyre disadvantage and reliability concerns as major reasons why the team has struggled to replicate its previous dominance.
But the same review noted an important distinction: when the margins are small, Norris has appeared better able to extract performance from the MCL40, and that trend has continued. At Zandvoort, McLaren adjusted the car between the Sprint and Grand Prix qualifying sessions, with Norris immediately converting the improvement into pole position. F1 noted that Piastri was “right with his teammate”, but ultimately could not extract the same pace on his final Q3 runs. This is not a large margin, but an important one. A tenth of a second in Q3 can determine grid position, which in turn dictates track position and the strategic options available through the undercut and overcut windows. Those windows can determine whether a driver rejoins in clean air or traffic, subsequently influencing tyre temperature, degradation and the ability to convert a race strategy into a result. Ultimately, the chain begins with performance extraction, and at present, Norris has shown a greater ability to consistently access the MCL40’s peak performance.
The car and driver cannot be separated

The difference between Piastri and Norris cannot be attributed to outright pace alone. The MCL40 has its own limitations, with its aerodynamic efficiency not yet at the level McLaren would have wanted, while its tyre behaviour has not always been predictable and its reliability has cost both drivers. At the same time, the new technical regulations have fundamentally changed the balance between aerodynamic performance and electrical deployment, leaving Piastri to adapt to a car that can move outside its optimal operating window quickly. These characteristics make extracting consistent performance particularly challenging, especially when small variations in tyre temperature, aerodynamic balance and setup can have a significant impact on lap time.
But that is precisely why the Norris comparison matters. Both drivers are working with the same machinery and attempting to solve the same engineering problem, yet Norris is currently doing so more effectively. That does not necessarily mean Norris possesses greater raw talent, meaning greater natural driving ability and instinctive pace; rather, throughout 2026, he has demonstrated a greater ability to translate the MCL40’s available performance into consistent lap time across qualifying and race conditions. For Piastri, the challenge is therefore finding a way to access the car’s performance range as consistently as his team mate.
McLaren’s strategy has magnified Piastri’s weaknesses

There is another layer to the analysis, as a driver who is already struggling to consistently extract maximum pace becomes more vulnerable when strategy decisions go against them. If Piastri qualifies P4 rather than P2, for example, the pit wall has less strategic flexibility, while losing track position during a pit stop makes recovering through the field significantly more difficult. If the MCL40 is sensitive to tyre temperature, a poorly timed stop can also push the tyres outside their optimum operating window, while inconsistent race pace can be further compounded by traffic, dirty air and overheating. This is why McLaren’s strategy mistakes have been particularly costly for Piastri: they are not necessarily creating every problem, but they can magnify weaknesses that already exist.
Canada is the clearest example, with the initial decision to start on the intermediate compound being defensible given the conditions, but the failure to adapt as the track dried proved costly. Hungary presents the opposite scenario, with the decision to pit Piastri early to cover the undercut being strategically understandable, but once he encountered traffic, his ability to recover the lost track position was significantly reduced. Zandvoort provides a third example, where the slow pit stop compromised Piastri’s race, but even after accounting for the loss of track position, his race pace remained insufficient. Together, these three races demonstrate the complex relationship between strategy and performance, showing how McLaren’s operational decisions have repeatedly interacted with Piastri’s own performance level.
So, has Piastri been unlucky?

There is no reasonable argument against the fact that Piastri has been unlucky throughout 2026. A DNS in China, a gearbox failure in Hungary, a slow pit stop at Zandvoort, McLaren’s strategic gamble in Canada, alongside incidents and penalties elsewhere, have all contributed to points being left on the table. However, bad luck alone is not sufficient to explain a 55-point deficit to Norris. This is where the comparison between the two drivers becomes important. F1’s mid-season review recorded the pair as level on race-day head-to-head results at the summer break, with both drivers registering five higher finishes than the other. That statistic is particularly revealing because Piastri’s problem is not that he is being beaten every Sunday; rather, Norris has been creating more opportunities to score heavily. When the MCL40 has been capable of a podium, Norris has more consistently put himself in a position to claim it, and when the car has been capable of victory, he has more frequently converted that potential into results. Over the course of a season, those marginal differences in qualifying position, race pace and execution accumulate, helping to explain how a combination of relatively small performance gaps and compromised weekends has developed into a 55-point championship deficit.
The verdict: all three explanations are true
Piastri’s 2026 season cannot be reduced to bad luck, McLaren’s strategy or a simple lack of pace. The evidence supports all three explanations, but not equally at every stage of the season. Early on, reliability played a significant role, with the Australian losing the opportunity to establish championship momentum before the campaign had properly begun. As the season progressed, strategy and execution became increasingly influential, with Canada demonstrating how McLaren’s pit-wall decision-making could fail to respond to changing conditions despite useful driver feedback, while Hungary showed how a strategically defensible decision could still leave Piastri in a vulnerable tactical position. More recently, however, the focus has shifted towards performance extraction. Zandvoort exposed a different issue: Piastri had demonstrated competitive qualifying pace, had track position and a competitive MCL40, but after the first stint, his race pace disappeared, with neither the driver nor team immediately able to explain why.
That is what makes the remainder of the 2026 season particularly important. McLaren have now demonstrated that the MCL40 is capable of winning, with Norris converting opportunities into victories in Hungary and Zandvoort. The team has also appeared to find a clearer performance direction, moving the car closer to the front of the grid and reducing some of the deficit that had defined the earlier part of its campaign. The circumstances surrounding Piastri are therefore beginning to change. The issues that affected his season were genuine, but as McLaren’s performance improves and the reliability picture becomes clearer, it becomes increasingly important for Piastri to demonstrate that he can consistently access the same level of performance as his teammate.
Ultimately, Piastri must demonstrate more flashes of pace and that he can beat Norris when McLaren provides both drivers with the opportunity to fight at the front. Piastri has already shown that he is capable of doing so, whether through his performance in Japan, his pace in Hungary before the gearbox failure or his strongest qualifying performances. What 2026 has yet to establish, however, is whether he can reproduce that level consistently enough.
That is the real question surrounding Oscar Piastri’s season. McLaren have cost him points, Piastri has lost points himself and the MCL40 has not always been competitive enough to challenge at the front. However, as the season has progressed, the most revealing comparison has become increasingly difficult to ignore: when the MCL40 enters its narrow performance window, Norris has more consistently been able to find and exploit it. Piastri has the pace and the ability to match him, but the remainder of 2026 will determine whether he can do so often enough to turn potential into sustained results.
