Russell takes Baku pole as Leclerc and Piastri complete the top three
George Russell secured pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after a chaotic qualifying session around the Baku City Circuit, with Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri completing the top three.
Strong winds created difficult conditions throughout the session, while multiple yellow flags and incidents around the circuit disrupted several flying laps.
The opening stages of qualifying produced an unpredictable order, with Ollie Bearman among the first drivers to take to the circuit. Sergio Pérez initially moved to the top of the timing screens, followed by Franco Colapinto.
Pierre Gasly and Arvid Lindblad then joined the fight at the front, before Max Verstappen set the first significant benchmark with a 1:45.168 to take provisional pole. Kimi Antonelli followed with a 1:45.504.
Isack Hadjar quickly demonstrated Red Bull's one-lap pace, going purple through the opening two sectors to move into P1. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri then entered the fight at the front, with Piastri moving as high as third after setting green sectors through the opening two sectors.
However, Piastri's next attempt was compromised after Pérez impeded his lap, while Norris also abandoned an attempt.
Russell subsequently produced the fastest lap of the session to that point, combining a green first sector with a purple second sector to set a 1:43.615 and move into P1.
Further down the order, Williams showed strong pace, with Carlos Sainz and Alexander Albon both progressing comfortably inside the top ten.
The biggest incident of Q1 came when Antonelli hit the wall at Turn 2. His Mercedes was left parked in the run-off area, ultimately bringing his qualifying session to an early conclusion.
With the final runs underway, Bearman remained in contention, while Sainz moved into eighth and Albon followed in after showing strong pace with Williams' upgrades.
Gasly also moved into sixth, 0.874 seconds behind Russell.

Both Aston Martin drivers entered qualifying with engine penalties, meaning Alonso and Stroll were already set to start from the back of the grid. Stroll's session was also affected by the yellow flags he caused during the session.
Sainz briefly puts Williams on top in Q2
Q2 began with Sainz immediately demonstrating Williams' improved pace.
The Spaniard went purple through Sector 1 on his opening flying lap before moving to P1, marking the first time he had put his Williams at the top of the timing screens.
Albon then moved into second with a 1:45.000, before Verstappen responded with a 1:44.200 to take the lead.
McLaren initially found itself further down the order, with Norris in fourth and Piastri in ninth. Piastri subsequently produced a purple second sector to climb to P2, while Norris remained inside the top four.
Verstappen later struggled to improve, recording a green first sector followed by yellow sectors through the remainder of the lap and dropping as low as seventh.
Hadjar continued to demonstrate strong pace, while Bearman remained around the edge of the Q3 cut-off.
Hamilton moved into fifth after going purple in Sector 1, while Leclerc remained in second.
Colapinto found himself in 11th after setting green sectors through the opening two sectors, while Gasly moved into seventh.
The final runs were again interrupted by yellow flags. Ocon stopped at Turn 15, bringing out another yellow flag, while Hadjar also came to a halt further around the circuit.
Piastri produced another strong lap late in the session, going purple through Sector 1 and green through Sector 2 to move into fourth.
However, Bearman could not improve enough to progress, ending a strong qualifying performance in P11.

Bearman's elimination was particularly notable after the Haas driver had briefly occupied the top three during the opening stages of qualifying.
Antonelli's session had already effectively ended following his Turn 2 crash in Q1, with his Mercedes remaining in the run-off area.
Russell beats Leclerc and Piastri to pole
The ten remaining drivers returned to the circuit for Q3, with Russell immediately establishing himself as one of the drivers to beat.
The Mercedes driver went purple through Sectors 1 and 2 on his opening flying lap, while Piastri also delivered a strong first attempt.
Piastri produced green sectors through the opening two sectors before setting a 1:43.571 to move onto provisional pole.
Norris responded with purple sectors in Sectors 1 and 2, moving into second, before Russell returned to the top of the order with another strong lap.
Hadjar continued Red Bull's impressive qualifying performance, going purple through the opening sectors to move into third.
Leclerc then entered the fight for pole, setting a purple first sector and moving into second, while Hamilton climbed to fourth after finding time through the opening two sectors.
Verstappen's first Q3 attempt was less clean. After a green Sector 1, he encountered a compromised second sector and remained down in eighth.
The final runs produced further drama.
Norris ran off the circuit at Turn 3, compromising his final attempt, while Colapinto also went off track during the session.
Piastri's final run included a yellow first sector, preventing him from improving on his provisional position. Despite this, his earlier 1:43.571 was enough to secure third on the grid.
Russell continued to find time, producing another purple Sector 1 and Sector 2 on his final run to maintain his position at the front.
Leclerc ultimately secured second, splitting Russell and Piastri, while Hadjar's strong qualifying session saw him take fourth ahead of teammate Verstappen.
Norris recovered from his compromised final run to qualify fifth, with Hamilton sixth and Gasly seventh.
Verstappen was forced to settle for eighth, while Sainz continued Williams' strong showing by qualifying ninth.
Colapinto completed the top ten.

Russell's pole position came after Mercedes consistently demonstrated strong one-lap pace throughout qualifying, while Leclerc and Piastri completed a tightly packed battle at the front.
Piastri will start third alongside Hadjar on the second row, with Norris and Hamilton forming the third row.
Behind them, Gasly and Verstappen will start seventh and eighth respectively, while Sainz and Colapinto round out the top ten.
