Interview by Owen Bradley, Edited by Simran Kanthi
Adrian Newey, Chief Technical Officer of Red Bull Racing, and his wife Amanda were present at Goodwood Revival this year, watching on in the pit lane as their son, Harrison took the wheel of a Jaguar E-Type, owned by his father.
I managed to grab both Adrian and his wife Amanda for a quick interview on Sunday afternoon, 18 September 2022.
Owen: Have you enjoyed the Goodwood Revival event this year?
Adrian Newey: Absolutely, we love coming here, and of course, our son is driving with Jenson [Button], so it is always good to be there supporting!
Amanda Newey: Of course! I think we always look forward to coming here, each year. It's such a great event!
Owen: Bad luck with the car there, it was looking very good for you. Do you know what happened to the car?
Adrian: We believe it was a gearbox issue in the end there, which was a shame because Harrison didn't get much racing, only one lap.
Owen: As a parent, are you nervous when watching your son compete?
Amanda: Yes, absolutely! Earlier on today, I was actually shaking! Of course, you never want anything bad to happen.
Owen: Adrian, would you say this year has been one of the best for you in F1? Of course, the statistics probably help. But what do you think?
Adrian: I think we've had quite a few great years, especially at Red Bull, and this one is not yet finished, so it's a little early and difficult to say! But as you said, with the statistics, so far I would say it has been a great year.
Adrian and Amanda had to leave to watch the beginning of the next race with Harrison competing.
Unfortunately, both Adrian and Amanda were understandably busy that day and had to make a quick exit to go to the grid. However, I would very much like to thank them both, as they were very welcoming and nice to everyone who approached them.
I was even lucky enough to get a photo with Adrian, who has been instrumental to Red Bull's success, and of course, has designed 15 Championship-Winning cars.
The Goodwood Revival was an incredible event, and I also would like to thank Divebomb and Umut Yelbaşı for giving me this opportunity to attend Goodwood with a Press Accreditation.
I am sorting out a full interview with others, and I hope that I can meet and interview Adrian and Amanda more in-depth in the future.
Thank you very much for reading. If you haven't already, be sure to subscribe to the Divebomb YouTube channel!
Can't help but wonder, it was really obvious from in car cameras that JB used lots of gear changes each lap, something his smooth style suits as it tends to create less pitch sensitivity front to rear and a stable platform, especially under braking. But interesting is a lot of European drivers and drivers of historics generally 'block shift' - so 5th straight to 2nd or 4th straight to 2nd... it requires a bit of a bigger brake effort and a decent heel and toe blip to cover the large difference in ratios going down but it does save a huge number of gearchanges and with a top gear straight and probably 2nd gear chicane, Goodwood has the full range…
