Formula One thrives on speculation, and rumours linking Daniel Ricciardo to Cadillac’s 2026 entry have sparked excitement across the motorsport community. Known as the Honey Badger, Ricciardo remains a fan favourite, despite leaving the sport when parting ways with Racing Bulls (RB) in 2024.

As Cadillac prepares for its F1 debut, could Ricciardo’s experience and charisma be the key to a bold start?

Why Ricciardo could be Cadillac’s ideal lead driver

Cadillac, partnering with Andretti Global, aims to make a strong impression in Formula One.

Ricciardo’s notable 13-year career, with 32 podiums and eight Grands Prix victories—including iconic wins at Monaco and Monza—makes him a prime candidate.

His triumph at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, securing McLaren’s first win in nine years, showcased his ability to maximise the performance of midfield cars, aligning with Cadillac’s early ambitions.

Potentially being paired with 25-year-old American Colton Herta, Ricciardo brings not only experience but also mentorship potential.

His global appeal, especially in the United States, where Formula One is surging, would greatly support Cadillac’s commercial goals, making him a valuable asset both commercially and competitively.

Rumours and promotional hints

Speculation began in late 2024 when MotorsportWeek named Ricciardo as a top contender for Cadillac’s line-up. The buzz further escalated when a PepsiCo promotional video tied to the Spanish Grand Prix featured Ricciardo alongside Cadillac branding. Fan polls on social media ranked him above Valtteri Bottas and Mick Schumacher as the driver most desired for a grid return. For a new team seeking instant credibility, Ricciardo’s star power is unmatched.

A quiet exit and new ventures

Ricciardo’s 2024 departure from RB was understated, with no formal announcement, leaving fans disappointed by the lack of closure.

Since then, he has focused on his lifestyle brand Enchanté and adrenaline-fuelled motocross events, suggesting a shift away from Formula One’s demands.

However, Formula One’s history shows that retirements are rarely permanent.

Cadillac’s current direction

Despite fan enthusiasm, paddock insider Kym Illman reported in May 2025 that Cadillac is not currently pursuing Ricciardo. Instead, the team is eyeing drivers like Sergio Pérez and prioritising Herta’s development. With only two seats available, competition is fierce, and Ricciardo’s intentions remain unclear.

The bottom line

Cadillac’s 2026 Formula One entry marks a pivotal moment for the sport’s U.S. expansion. Their driver choices will signal their strategy: experience and branding or investing in long-term development. Ricciardo brings valuable knowledge and star power, but his return hinges on his willingness and Cadillac’s vision.

Whether the Honey Badger roars back or remains off the grid, Cadillac’s debut will be a defining storyline in F1’s new era.
