After months of speculation running wild across the motorsport community, F1 design pioneer Adrian Newey is finally set for a fresh contract, choosing to partner up with Aston Martin starting in the 2026 season.
Equipped with a wealth of engineering expertise, the British aerodynamicist has made the move to the Silverstone-based team as their design head.
Newey, the man who is often seen carrying his infamous red notebook and a quiet, observant demeanour around the paddock on a typical race weekend, also happens to be the same man who created masterpieces of F1 engineering. It is a no-brainer that Newey ended up attracting lucrative offers from several teams for his next career move.
The former Red Bull Chief Technical Officer was previously linked with other constructors across the grid, especially Ferrari, with several rumours hinting that the Scuderia would be his final destination at one point.Â
Previously, Newey had expressed regrets on not taking up the opportunity to join forces with the Italian outfit, despite being offered a role there over the years. This further fuelled the Newey-Ferrari rumours.
But with Aston Martin’s latest announcement, all these rumours have been put out.
With a total of 12 Constructors’ Championships under his belt, the 65-year-old tasted success through his career-boosting cars while working with multiple F1 teams throughout the decades such as Williams, Leyton House, and McLaren. His move to Aston Martin marks his fifth F1 team.
His greatest design to date, the RB19, is described as one of, if not the most successful car in Formula One history, achieving 21 out of 22 wins in a single season.Â
His shift to Aston Martin means that Newey will fulfil the dream of working with another stellar driver after Max Verstappen – two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard is currently on a multi-year contract with the British team.
Soon to be in alliance with Alonso and his teammate Lance Stroll, Newey’s leadership and guidance within the team will play a prominent role in preparation for the 2026 regulations and beyond.
