The 2026 GT World Challenge Europe (GTWC EU) season makes its final hurrah, with the Endurance Cup and the season finale at Portimao. With four-time F1 champion Max Verstappen taking the wheel, alongside Valentino Rossi, the event is packed with stars, in what is set to be a milestone event for GT racing as a whole.

After the GTWC EU Sprint Cup finale at Barcelona, where three teams celebrated their titles amidst a tough weekend, characterised by a weather scare that forced SRO to cancel Qualifying Two, Portugal’s Portimao takes centre stage for the season finale.

In what will surely be a celebration of GT racing, there are still titles to be decided, meaning this is no stroll in the park for most of the teams.

Entry list

A massive cast of 61 cars, divided into 19 Pro, eight Gold, 17 Silver and 17 Bronze entries, will take on the three-hour Endurance challenge. The main story regarding the entries is, of course, a much-awaited GT World Challenge debut for Formula One star Verstappen, who will sit behind the wheel of his own team’s No.3 Mercedes-AMG GT3, alongside regular Chris Lulham and Ben Barnicoat.

Barnicoat will return to GTWC EU for the first time since his sole 2025 appearance at the Nurburgring, with him and Verstappen replacing WEC-bound Jules Gounon and Dani Juncadella.

The duo have prioritised their World Endurance Championship (WEC) programmes with Alpine and Genesis respectively, as the event clashes with WEC’s 6 Hours of Barcelona. This brings a fresh set of challenges, with the most notable ones courtesy of ROWE Racing. The team’s No.98 BMW Pro entry features two new drivers, with Augusto Farfus and Raffaele Marciello replaced by Phillip Eng and Marco Wittmann.

All the driver lineup changes, and the reasoning behind them, can be found here.

There are also some new entries for this event. Team Motopark brings a second entry, the No.19 Mercedes, which is entered into the Silver class, alongside the returning No.20, which will race for only the second time this season.

Razoon - more than racing, will field a second Porsche to add to their No.914 car, with the No.41 entered into the Bronze class. Speaking of Porsche, the High Class Racing team returns with a new entry, with the No.269 car entered into Bronze. The full entry list for the upcoming GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Portimao event can be found here.

Championship standings

In Endurance Cup terms, Pro entries have no reason other than the hunger to win as a motive, as the No.48 Winward Mercedes trio of Maro Engel, Lucas Auer and Luca Stolz wrapped up the title at the Nürburgring. However, the overall season-long title is still up for grabs, with points taken in across Endurance and Sprint GTWC EU terms.

In the Gold Cup, expect a straight fight for the title between three entries. The No.998 ROWE Racing BMW of Ugo de Wilde, Jens Klingmann and Tim Tramnitz lead the way with 89 points.

It is a narrow margin, though, as the No.58 Garage 59 McLaren entry of Tom Fleming, Benjamin Goethe and Louis Prette sit only three points behind, with the third-place No.71 Selected Car Racing Ferrari all-Dane crew of Simon Birch, Malte Ebdrup and Frederik Schandorff on 78 points, with 26 still in play for the Portimao weekend (25 for the race win plus one point for pole position).

American driver Dustin Blattner, driving for the No.74 Kessel Racing Ferrari, holds the advantage for the Bronze drivers' title, despite sitting second in the standings. His teammate and points leader Dennis Marschall cannot win the Bronze title solo, due to him not being a Bronze-rated driver.

Since he will be removed from the points table come the end of the season, Blattner has only the No.991 Paradine Competition BMW duo of Darren Leung and James Kellett to fear, with the gap between them being 16 points (87 to 71).

Aside from the two Endurance Cup-specific title showdowns, the weekend will also feature an overall battle for the 2026 GT World Challenge Europe crown.

This will be fought among the teams, with Team WRT holding the Overall standings lead over Winward Racing. The former sit on 142.5 points and the latter on 137.5, with the BMW crews in with a good shot at making good of some underwhelming individual campaigns.

In the Gold Teams Cup, AF Corse heads the title race with 185 points, as Garage 59 follows with 173, with this also being a two-horse race.

In Bronze, Kessel Racing is poised to secure the class championship, as only three points in Portugal will be enough to clinch the overall drivers' title.

As mentioned earlier, points leader Marschall cannot win the title, and that leaves the No.87 Winward Mercedes duo of Rinat Salikhov and Marvin Dienst in the effective championship lead, with 141 points.

Darren Leung follows only five points behind, with 2seas Motorsport’s No.222 lineup of Charles Dawson and Kiern Jewiss on 126.5 and Dustin Blattner on 122.5, still in mathematical contention.

Current fourth-place man Eddie Cheever III is also a non-factor like Marschall, given his Gold rating.

One of the newer purpose-built racing circuits to have broken ground in 2008, the Algarve International Circuit, or Portimão as it is most commonly known, has relatively quickly established itself as a top-tier motorsport destination.

Having hosted the Formula One Portuguese Grand Prix twice in 2020 and 2021 (and will do so again in 2027 and 2028), its MotoGP counterpart since 2020 and other endurance and feeder series events, the track makes its return to the GT World Challenge Europe calendar after 11 years.

The 4.692 km (2.891 mi), 18-turn layout has a decent amount of elevation changes and has a good variation of corners, with the wide nature of the track inviting praise from several corners as it allows for better overtaking opportunities.

Schedule for the weekend

Track action begins on Thursday, 15 October 2026, with the Official Paid Test session at 11:50 and the Bronze test session at 17:40.

Free Practice 1 and Qualifying are scheduled for Friday, 16 October 2026 at 08:45 and 17:55 respectively. Saturday, 17 October 2026 brings the three-hour race, with the starting time being 17:00

Both Qualifying and the Race will be free to watch for everyone on the GTWorld YouTube channel, as will the supporting series’ races, with the McLaren Trophy Europe, GT2 and GT4 European Series all hosting their final rounds.
