The Azerbaijan Grand Prix race weekend has been of two halves for seven time world champion Lewis Hamilton. Despite showing pace throughout the practice sessions on Friday and Saturday, the Ferrari driver failed to progress past Q2 in qualifying and ultimately qualified in P12.
On the sudden difference in performance across the two days, Hamilton stated: “I’m so disappointed.”
Speaking further on what went wrong in Q2 specifically, Hamilton elaborated: “Our pace had been good. We’d been progressing, I was feeling really on it, didn’t make any mistakes, didn’t see me down any exit roads. It was just that we didn’t have the right tyre on at the end.”
Since joining the team at the beginning of the 2025 season, Hamilton’s highlight has been a sprint race victory in Shanghai. A Grand Prix podium has remained out of his grasp while teammate Charles Leclerc has been more successful on that front. However, this weekend specifically, Leclerc stated: “I think Lewis was a lot more on the pace straight away and more consistent than I’ve been during the weekend.”
Despite an earlier exit from qualifying than he would have been hoping for, Hamilton remained positive about the race on Sunday and what could be possible for him. Hamilton reminded fans: “There’s been lots of positives from this weekend. [...] I’ll take it on the chin and keep trying.”
Looking ahead to Sunday’s Grand Prix, Hamilton will be hoping that the pace the Ferrari showed on Friday and Saturday will help him move through the field. The tense battle between Hamilton’s current team, Ferrari, and his former team, Mercedes, in the World Constructors’ Championship means there is still all to play for until the end of the season.
