Norris admits "Hungary was an outlier" but remains confident for F1's second half

The summer break is over and the McLaren team is back on track. While some drivers might be feeling the pressure of a long second half of the season, Lando Norris appeared relaxed, refreshed and confident.

Norris, who has been battling his teammate, Oscar Piastri for the Drivers’ Championship, looked back on the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix, a race that saw a dramatic reversal of fortunes due to a risky strategy call.

“Budapest was an outlier - the decision to go onto a one-stop, it was more to get ahead of [Russell], not necessarily to try and win the race,” Norris said.

The Briton admitted that the strategy was a gamble, but it paid off handsomely: “It was pretty amazing it turned out that way and was a perfect result.”

The win was particularly crucial for Norris as it allowed him to close the gap to his title rival and teammate, Piastri. Heading into the summer break, he managed to reduce Piastri’s lead in the championship to just nine points.

While there were some intense moments with his teammate on track, Norris emphasised the strong relationship within the team.

“Maybe it was not a perfect, harmonic race between us as a team but at the same time, it was just an example of what can happen in racing at times,” he stated.

“We both want as drivers things not to be overly strict and not be able to race. We have a good understanding as a team.”

Looking ahead at the rest of the season, the young driver remains grounded, despite his recent run of strong form.

He stated that he doesn’t believe in “momentum” but believes confidence is key:

“Having two good races doesn’t mean I’ll have a third one. You are racing the best drivers in the world, the cars are different - there are more variables in our sport.

"So I would never say I have good momentum, but confidence - does it set you up for the next weekend? I would say yes.”

With a long, challenging part of the season ahead, Norris said he’s ready: “I felt good before, I feel good now, ready to go again for a long, tricky, challenging part of the season - but for all good reasons.”
