Williams have announced the extension of Logan Sargeant’s contract with the Williams Formula One team, which will see him continue with the Grove-based team into 2024 as well, partnering Alex Albon.
Days after completing his rookie season in Formula One with the team, the news was announced via the team’s social media handles. In the hours before releasing the news, the account teased through their bio that they were announcing an extension, keeping everyone on their toes.
Logan Sargeant competed for the team, finishing 21st overall in the standings, while Williams achieved seventh in the constructors, their highest finishing position since 2017. The 22-year old swiftly moved into Formula One, after finishing fourth in the Formula 2 championship in 2022, making Sargeant the first American to compete in Formula One since Alexander Rossi in 2015.
The American had a rookie season of highs and lows, with four DNFs, one of which taking place in the controversial Qatar Grand Prix, when he fell ill during the race due to heat exhaustion and dehydration.
Sargeant’s high of his inaugural Formula One season came at his home race in Austin, where he scored his first point of the season at his home race. This finish made Sargeant the first American to score a point in a Formula One Grand Prix since 1993.
After a controversial first season for Sargeant, many people doubted whether Sargeant would make it into the 2024 season. Another rookie had been fired after just 10 races in 2023, Nyck de Vries down at AlphaTauri
Sargeant was elated to continue racing for Williams, commenting:
“I am thrilled to be continuing with Williams Racing for the 2024 season.
“It has been an incredible journey with the team so far, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue developing as a driver within such a talented and dedicated group.
“We have exciting plans for the future, and I can’t wait to contribute to the team’s success in the coming year.”
Williams team boss James Vowles too commented on the decision to back Sargeant for another season, saying:
“I am pleased to continue our journey with Logan into the 2024 season.
“Logan has demonstrated immense skill whilst under the pressure of the world stage, making him a perfect fit for our team.
“We have great confidence in his abilities and believe that together we can achieve even greater success in the upcoming season.
This is a massive opportunity for Sargeant to firm his credentials as the right fit for the Williams seat, and it will be exciting to see how he performs in his sophomore season of Formula One, no longer considered a rookie driver in the pinnacle of motorsport.
Sargeant’s signing also means the 2024 Formula One grid is complete, the only change being the mid-season introduction of Daniel Ricciardo at AlphaTauri, in place of Nyck de Vries.
