Piastri feeling “much happier” in Brazil compared to the last couple of weeks

We have reached the 21st round of the 2025 Formula One season and Oscar Piastri currently sits third in the Drivers’ Championship. São Paulo is hosting another sprint weekend with Piastri qualifying third on Friday evening.

Following a solid sprint qualifying, Piastri spoke through his experience in the session.

“The soft just was a bit different to what I expected. A couple of big moments on my first lap which wasn’t ideal. That was a bit of a shame, but ultimately I’ve felt much happier today than the last couple of weeks.

The Australian driver went second fastest in the first and only practice session for the weekend. This was behind his teammate, Lando Norris, who is currently one point ahead of Piastri in the Drivers’ Championship.

“Practice went very well and for sprint qualifying changed a few things, which took a little bit of getting used to again. Ultimately, I’m pretty happy.

“I would have liked a little bit more but we can definitely fight with what we’ve got and there are obviously a lot more points on Sunday.”

Saturday in Brazil is shaping up to be intriguing weather-wise. A cyclone warning has been issued, so only time will tell if the sprint race will go ahead.

Last year’s São Paulo Grand Prix weekend was the most chaotic of the season. Qualifying was postponed to the Sunday morning before the race due to severe weather. The early morning session a few hours before the race had five red flags and changing weather conditions.

Looking ahead to Saturday in Brazil, Piastri is hoping to capitalise on any opportunities he can:

“It’s going to be an interesting day. Let’s see what weather we get. I’ll try to take whatever opportunities there are.

"I think the pace in the car has been really good, so hopefully that translates to whatever we get."

Piastri will need to stay towards the top of the leaderboard in all sessions for the rest of the weekend to compete with Norris in the championship. The title race is almost coming to an end and every move counts going forward. Will Piastri be able to challenge Norris from the second row tomorrow?
