Last year, Super GT introduced a round held at Malaysia , the first Super GT race at Sepang International Circuit in 13 years and the first international race since 2019. The race saw the No.37 Team TOM’S car piloted by Giuliano Alesi and Ukyo Sasahara win a chaotic race.

However, there were already many logistical and cost issues that prevented some of the GT300 teams from participating. 11 teams had to skip the round due to a variety of reasons, and GoodSmile Racing had to get two new drivers for the round.

Today, GTA and HARO Sports have announced that the Malaysia round will be postponed. “This decision follows a comprehensive assessment of the current global environment inducing the escalating and uncertain situation in the Middle East, which has introduced significant operational and logistical challenges,” their statement read.

They also mention that a substantial increase in transportation costs has affected their decision, claiming it would affect the “feasibility of staging the event to the standard expected by the championship, its stakeholders and fans.”

This is not the first time a race event has been cancelled or postponed over the uncertain geopolitical situations in the Middle East. The Qatar 1812KM, initially the season opener for the World Endurance Championship, has been postponed to the end of the year, and Formula One had to cancel their Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix.

Not all hope is lost as GTA and HARO Sports insist this is simply a postponement the round will take place once “conditions allow for a safe, stable and high-quality event.”

Ticket holders can avail a refund, but the refund window closes on the 30th of April. Those who do not request a refund before this date will have their tickets automatically upgraded to include a free grid walk.
