The Boost Mobile Top Ten Shoot Out was topped by hometown hero Broc Feeney, marking three in a row for the Queenslander - he topped the timesheets with a 1:15.447. Teammate Will Brown locks out the front grid with Feeney, an all Red Bull grid looking positive.
Behind, more Ford glory with Aaron Cameron and Brodie Kostecki - an exciting race set for a Sunday cruise.
Again, today's 250km race will feature a compulsory two-stop, with teams starting all in the paddock starting the race on a Dunlop Super Soft tyre; weather meant to hold off until later in the afternoon.
As it happens
Down towards Turn 1, the field got through relatively clean as both Bull's took off ahead of the pack - Cameron getting curious on approach to the Beach Chicanes.
Further back, David Reynolds slaps the tyre barrier with the left side of the car; the left rear looking significantly damaged.
Lap 2, Anton De Pasquale comes into the lane limping back with a suspected right rear issues - pitted for new tyres. The front straight is full of De Pasquale's tyre debris.
Safety car has been deployed by Lap 3 as Reynolds is in the pit garage, the team working furiously to get him back out there.
Lap 6, the Safety Car is brought back into the lane and racing is expected to resume - Waters complains of rubber marking on his windscreen after contact with flying debris.
Lap 9, the field push on as Rylan Gray almost makes a major incident at Turn 11 - just going slightly too late on the brakes.
On Lap 11, Jobe Stewart is now out of his Erebus Motorsport Chevrolet Camaro, suspected gear box issues at play there that could end his race earlier than anticipated, the team hopeful to mend the error and get him back out there.
Lap 14, De Pasquale heads back into the pits for yet another tyre change; it seems he's working overtime to make up the pace lost from his earlier incident.
Lap 16, Kai Allen and Zach Bates come in to do their first pit stop of the day to cover off De Pasquale for later on in the afternoon.
Lap 17, Ryan Wood is told to shake and bake back in sixth position, behind his Walkinshaw TWG teammate, Chaz Mostert. Wood showcased just how much of the team game he is willing to play last year, with fans hoping to see a slither of the same furious racing battles once again.
Lap 19, Kostecki comes into the pit lane, effectively popping him out of the race-train forming. He took four new tyres, six-seconds of fuel - a change of strategy ahead.
Lap 20, Mode One is told to Mostert, the No.1 Walkinshaw TWG Toyota Supra covering off Kostecki - chaos breaks loose as the team suffer a dead right rear rattle gun, giving Kostecki more time to get past and crush the hopes of an undercut.
Lap 22, Wood bails out of the final part of the Beach Chicane, now sitting behind Aaron Cameron in fourth position. Mostert asks his engineer, Sam Scaffidi, what pace Kostecki is doing.
Lap 23, Brown comes into the lane, four new soft tyres and a drink of fuel - a very clean and nice pit stop. He's chucked straight into a battle upon re-entry, Kostecki hot on his tail. The friends and podcast co-host's battle it out as Brown skates on cold Dunlop Soft tyres. Kostecki gets the move done seamlessly, grabbing a FireBall Fire Pass on his way through.
Amid the battle, an alert pops up on screen suggesting an investigation will take place after the session; the car under investigation will be car No.1, Mostert. The car was dropped as the fuel rig was still attached.
Lap 26, Wood finally gets past Cameron as the start of Lap 27 begins and Feeney goes into the pit lane for a short stop with four new Dunlop Soft tyres and a good drink of fuel - the stop clean, an estimated 38.75 second stop. He gets out in front of Kostecki and Brown in position 10.
Lap 30, Wood comes in for a fill-to-tyres, very short stop as he pops out relative to Mostert, behind in position 11 - four drivers yet to pit, putting him in fifth.
Lap 38, James Golding in car No.7 is rewarded a bad sportsmanship flag from kerb hops at Turn 10.
Lap 44, a heated battle between Brown and Mostert is alive and well as Bates comes into the lane - his bumper being angle-grinded off to reduce the tyre wear from carbon-fibre to rubber ratio impact.
Lap 46, a bad sportsmanship flag is shown to Brown from excessive kerb hopping at Turn 10; Mostert gains on the rear of Brown during the race control radio. Mostert looks to the inside, Brown defending furiously - Mostert cranky about the kerb hops and defensive driving.
Lap 49, Mostert walks Brown wide, allowing Mostert and Wood to both get past, pushing ahead to chase after Kostecki. Jarrod Hughes is now all over the back of Brown adding further pressure.
Lap 51, Matthew Payne comes into the lane after a very long stint - out on track, Brown loses three places on the back straight, now sitting in ninth.
Lap 52, Brown makes him way into the BP pit lane to take his second stop. A big gap between drinks; a ride height change at the front of the car to help the tyre life for the end of the race.
Lap 56, Wood comes in to do his second stop, a big drink and tures, a front adjustment - the front splitter looking to be damaged. Kosteki comes in immeditaley after. A bad sportsmanship flag is awarded to Kostecki simultaneously after kerb hopping earlier.
Lap 58, Feeney comes in taking new tyres and a big gulp of fuel, Kostecki behind Feeney on the pit exit, Jayden Ojeda gving Feeny a bit of time to breathe and warm the tyres.
Lap 63, Mostert comes into the lane - new tyres, tear-off fixed up and a nice drink of fuel for the end. He pops out behind both Shell V Power Racing Mustang's and Feeney's Red Bull Ampol Racing Mustang.
Gray holds up Feeney, but not for long after helping Kostecki gain closer before they switch postions. Wood and Hughes make contact prior to the Beach Chicane, significant contact at Turn 4 - a critical point in the race for the No.2 Walkinshaw TWG Toyota Supra. He faces potential elimination from the Finals Series.
Lap 67, Mostert continues powering forward, hitting fastest time lap by lap - commentators speculating the stress at Walkinshaw TWG Racing; Wood asking a mate for a hand, the team suggesting that is the plan... Mostert's pace is causing considerable doubt for his teammate.
14 Laps to go, Mostert is told to be a good teammate and help Wood; Wood is 11 seconds behind - Mostert questioning his team after a firm radio call from the team. He's seen coasting alng, dropping way back in pace.
12 Laps to go, Wood catches Mostert right before the Beach Chicane, Mostert helping his teammate after a lapse in short memory. It does the trick, getting Wood in the top seven drivers and out of harms way from elimination for the Finals Series.
Nine laps to go, Wood asks the team to get Mostert to back off as he's having issues with his tyres. Hughes comes out of eighth position - the team short on fuel for car No.99, the Erebus Chevrolet Camaro losing its potential best finish of the season.
The elimination zone hopes for Wood were short lived, with Hughes's drop down the order - De Pasquale has made it into the safe zone, dropping Wood by four points as it stands in the Live Ladder for the Supercars Finals Series.
Up ahead, Kostecki has splitter damage - now sitting +5.311 between he and Feeney in the lead. Waters and Golding go head to head on Lap 81, both fighting for seventh position - all hell breaking loose for the paddock as each driver fights like its the last drive of a championship to keep their Finals Series points, all equally trying to avoid elimination.
Three laps to go, Wood looks to be struggling ahead of his teammate; Mostert is still keeping Andre Heimgartner behind - talk on how Wood seems to be eliminated, and if Mostert makes the decision to push past his teammate and gain his third step on the podium.
On the last lap, Mostert gets a swap with his teammate, getting his podium spot back as his teammate is out for the Finals Series. Feeney crosses the finish line in first, finally grabbing a No.1 surfboard for the first time in his short Supercars career; his 33rd win out of 154 races.
Allen, Wood and Le Brocq have been eliminated from Finals Series as a result of this afternoons race.
