Andretti to run Nissan powertrains for the GEN4 era

Andretti have confirmed it will switch manufacturer partners from Porsche to Nissan for the Gen4 era of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, beginning at the end of 2026. 

This means that Season 12 marked the end of Porsche and Andretti’s three-year partnership, which began in Season 9. The German outfit will field four factory cars next season, while Andretti takes the next step forward with a recharged technical direction. 

One of the standout moments from this collaboration came in its first year, when the American team claimed its first Formula E drivers’ title in Season 9, as Jake Dennis secured the championship in the team’s debut season with Porsche powertrains.

For Nissan, this collaboration represents a significant advancement after competing without a customer team for the Manufacturers’ Championship in Season 12 following the departure of NEOM McLaren, which ended a two-year partnership from 2023 to 2025. 

Despite its short tenure, the Nissan-McLaren collaboration delivered a race win for Sam Bird in São Paulo in 2024 and saw McLaren finish just seven points behind the Japanese team in the manufacturers’ standings during the first GEN3 season. 

Nissan made significant strides in their pursuit of the Drivers' Championship with Oliver Rowland in 2025, but the absence of a customer team limited its ability to contend for the Manufacturers’ title. Looking ahead, the partnership with Andretti is expected to benefit both parties. 

Andretti restores Nissan’s ability to compete on both fronts and strengthens its overall Gen4 programme at a time when manufacturer depth is expected to become increasingly important.

Team principal Roger Griffiths strong words on the news of shifting powertrains for the Gen4 era:

“With a motorsport’s legacy lasting over 80 years and multiple wins and Championships across a diverse range of categories including the current Formula E World Drivers’ Championship, Nissan has more than proven its pedigree at the highest echelons of the sport.

"As an early pioneer of electric vehicles, Nissan has developed vast knowledge in this category and through their time in Formula E have shown how immensely competitive they can be.

"It’s these characteristics that align so well with the approach of Andretti Formula E and why we are extremely proud to be aligned with the Japanese manufacturer entering the highly anticipated GEN4 era in Formula E.”

Nissan team principal Tommaso Volpe echoed the strong sentiments, looking to supply another team for the first time since the end of Season 11.

“We’re delighted to welcome Andretti Formula E as our customer team for the GEN4 era. Formula E is an increasingly competitive championship, and having a strong partner is an important part of maximizing both performance and technical development.

"Andretti is one of the most successful names in motorsport, including Formula E, where it has established itself as one of the leading teams in the sport, consistently competing at the front and securing a Drivers’ World Championship. Nissan will become the third team to supply the current Andretti outfit a powertrain - following in the footsteps of BMW in Season 8, and Porsche from Seasons 9 to 12.

With Andretti now poised to join as a customer team, Nissan’s GEN4 project gains added depth — while Andretti secures the closer, more collaborative manufacturer relationship it believes is essential for future success in Formula E.
