Formula One returned to the Silverstone Circuit for the British Grand Prix Sprint, with Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli lining up on the front row alongside Lewis Hamilton after an impressive Sprint Qualifying performance on Friday. George Russell started fifth for Mercedes, while McLaren's Lando Norris lined up sixth, leaving both drivers with work to do over the 17-lap contest.

Hamilton converted pole position into an early race lead, maintaining first place ahead of Antonelli through the opening corners. Norris moved into third, while Russell, Verstappen and Piastri fought closely behind during the opening phase of the Sprint.

Hamilton controlled the early stages of the Sprint, leading the opening laps and setting the fastest lap of the sprint. Despite the Ferrari driver's early advantage, championship leader Antonelli remained firmly in contention, consistently matching Hamilton's pace and recording quicker lap times across several laps. With Mercedes encouraging the Italian to improve through Turn 7 while carefully managing his battery deployment, the gap continued to shrink before Antonelli eventually made his move for the lead.

Further behind, Verstappen briefly gained a position on Russell before the Mercedes driver fought back to reclaim fourth. Charles Leclerc also joined the battle after closing rapidly on the leading group, eventually overtaking Verstappen following an intense wheel-to-wheel fight to move into fifth.

McLaren endured a more difficult Sprint than expected. While Norris remained comfortably in the podium positions throughout the race, Piastri struggled to make progress after briefly challenging Russell during the opening laps before slipping behind both Leclerc and Verstappen.

Elsewhere, Sergio Pérez's challenging afternoon worsened after contact with Fernando Alonso earned the Cadillac driver a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision. Earlier in the Sprint, Pérez had also reported brake issues as he continued another difficult weekend.

The decisive moment came during the closing stages when Antonelli finally found a way past Hamilton to take the lead. Once ahead, the Italian managed the gap to the chequered flag, while Hamilton was unable to launch a counterattack despite remaining within range.

Behind the leading duo, Norris was instructed to fuel save over the final laps but comfortably secured third place, finishing seven seconds behind Hamilton. The Sprint also provided valuable strategic information for Sunday's Grand Prix, with tyre degradation proving lower than anticipated across the field and suggesting a one-stop strategy could be the preferred option.

Antonelli crossed the line to secure his first Formula One Sprint victory, becoming the youngest winner since the Sprint format was introduced. Hamilton delighted the home crowd by finishing second, while Norris completed the podium to make it two British drivers in the top three.

Russell recovered to finish fourth ahead of Leclerc, with Verstappen taking sixth. Piastri endured a frustrating afternoon to finish seventh, while Liam Lawson claimed the final Sprint point in eighth after another composed performance.
