BTCC Preview - Silverstone
The British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) returns to Silverstone for the penultimate meeting of the season. Ashley Sutton leads the championship standings by a huge margin of 115 points, as the Ford driver looks set to smash the BTCC title record by securing his fifth championship.
Meanwhile, Sutton’s rivals, Tom Ingram and Dan Cammish, will attempt to score as many points as possible, in a bid to take the title down to the line at the final race meeting of the season in Brands Hatch.
Silverstone is one of the major flagship weekends of the BTCC season, with the championship using the shorter national layout. The drivers race down the front straight into Copse corner, before then reaching Maggotts.
The circuit then cuts through the infield, as the drivers then race down the Wellington straight, into Brooklands followed by Luffield and Woodcote, before heading down the front straight and across the line. This circuit tends to favour cars able to achieve higher top speeds and strong acceleration, with long straights and sweeping corners making it a very fast and flowing track.
The main overtaking hotspots to watch out for will be the opening corner at Copse, and the slow left-hander of Brooklands at the end of the Wellington straight, with drivers often able to out-brake one another into the tricky left-hander.
Sutton will be seeking championship glory on Sunday, with the Ford driver needing to stay more than 76 points ahead of Cammish and Ingram in the standings after all three races at Silverstone.
Sutton’s Ford Focus has been impressive at circuits with similar characteristics to the iconic Silverstone track. The Ford is typically fast on straights and quick punching out of each corner.
Mixing an experienced BTCC champion in Ash Sutton, along with the nature of the Ford Focus, it makes the pairing incredibly difficult to beat at Silverstone, a circuit that plays to the advantage of the Ford.
The championship contenders further behind need to reduce Sutton’s lead in the championship to 75 points at minimum. This means that either Cammish or Ingram need to gain 40 points on Sutton ahead of the finale in Brands Hatch. With 20 points awarded for each race victory, and three races on Sunday, there is a mathematical chance for either of the two contenders to drag the title race on to the final weekend of the year.
Realistically, the two contenders face a significantly steep challenge. BTCC’s boost system will also likely play a vital role in the outcome of this weekend, with the long straights and sweeping corners allowing for cars with more boost to potentially make more overtakes.
The boost will allow for different approaches in strategy, with some drivers potentially choosing to save the boost for later in a race, allowing for cars at the start to battle and bunch up whilst using their boost earlier on. This subsequently could allow a car that saves their boost to come through later in the race.
Should Sutton secure the 2026 BTCC title at Silverstone, he will break the record for most Drivers’ titles, with that record currently tied at four between Sutton, Turkington and Andy Rouse. With the former practically putting one hand on the trophy after Croft, the Ford driver looks likely to become the most successful BTCC driver of all time.
Sutton is still a fair way behind on the most individual race wins record, with Jason Plato holding that record at 97 victories, and Sutton on 55.
Further down the grid, the CPRL Mercedes cars of Adam Morgan and Daniel Rowbottom have been making strong progress since the middle of the season, with the pair taking multiple podiums and Morgan securing several victories during a difficult time for the team.
The characteristics of the Mercedes may allow Morgan and Rowbottom to frequently challenge for the podium places, potentially leading to championship ramifications for the title contenders, as the two CPRL Mercedes cars have nothing to lose in regard to a championship.
Racing action gets underway at Silverstone this weekend on Saturday, with practice at 10:05 BST, followed by Qualifying at 14:00 BST and the Qualifying race at 15:05. Sunday’s racing action begins at 11:15 BST with the first race of the day.
The second race is scheduled to begin at 14:30 BST, with the final race of the weekend scheduled for 17:20 BST, rounding off the weekend action. Support series action this weekend includes the competitive Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain, F4 British Championship, Mini Challenge Trophy and Caterham Seven Championship.
The support series offers one-make series such as the Porsche Carrera Cup and open-wheel racing such as the F4 British Championship. Expect the support series to be just as competitive and action-packed as the headline event over the course of the race weekend.
