After a two year Career at McLaren, Daniel Ricciardo is set to leave the papaya orange team at the end of 2022.
The McLaren driver hasn’t secured a seat for next season, so this leaves many wondering why he has left. While many think this is so that Oscar Piastri could move in and take his seat, others believe this is because he is going to Alpine.
Ricciardo stated “ It’s been a privilege to be part of the McLaren Racing family for the last two seasons, but following several months of discussion with Zak and Andreas, we have decided to terminate my contract with the team early and agree to mutually part ways at the end of the season.”
"I'll be announcing my own future plans in due course but regardless of what this next chapter brings, I have no regrets and am proud of the effort and work I gave McLaren, especially the win in Monza, last season."
Ricciardo did have a contract until 2023 when joining McLaren and was certain he was going to stay, even releasing a statement on social media in July before the Alpine-Piastri drama began, that he would be staying.
The bombshell news follows the wild sequence of events that began with Fernando Alonso moving to Aston Martin following the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The drama has 2021 Formula 2 champion Oscar Piastri at its centre, with the young driver publicly denying joining Alpine next season, and insisting he was driving elsewhere.
