Formula One has returned home to Silverstone for this sprint weekend, which means the drivers had just one hour of practice to acclimatise to the circuit where it all began back in 1950.

Lewis Hamilton has won nine times at Silverstone, the record for any driver at any circuit; FP1 has proved that he is in the hunt for a tenth as he topped the session with a time of 1:29.260.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli was behind in P2 by 0.213 seconds, and the second Ferrari of Charles Leclerc was P3. Coming home fresh off his dominant victory in Austria, George Russell finished the session in P4.

The time sheet signifies the two teams in contention, as does McLaren and Red Bull’s session which showed that they are both on the back foot.

With McLaren sporting a special livery for this weekend, fans saw every angle of it through the iconic Maggots and Beckets section as Oscar Piastri had a high-speed spin after clipping the kerb. The Australian continued and finished P5, ahead of an unhappy Max Verstappen who’s best lap was only good enough for P6.

The second Red Bull of Isack Hadjar was promisingly close to his teammate by less than a tenth of a second; they were separated by Lando Norris, the reigning World Champion and last year’s winner could only manage P7 in the second McLaren.

Nico Hulkenberg, Liam Lawson and Franco Colapinto were P9, P10 and P11 respectively, showing that the fight for the lower end of the points will be tight between multiple teams.

Down the order, the American outfit of Cadillac are also displaying a special livery to celebrate the 4th July this weekend. The team look to have made a step forward and are much closer to the rest of the field after their disastrous weekend in Austria which saw both cars retiring by lap five.

Looking ahead:

As we head straight into Sprint Qualifying at 16:30 BST, it looks as though we have two British drivers in contention to take pole. Antonelli and Leclerc will be aiming to deny this. Time will tell if Ferrari can keep this momentum, at a circuit that is dominated by high-speed corners.
