George Russell has taken victory in the Zandvoort Sprint, holding off Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris in a tense race which saw rapidly changing conditions and rain arrive on the final lap.

Kimi Antonelli finished fourth ahead of Oscar Piastri, with Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and Pierre Gasly completing the points-paying positions.

Sergio Perez was forced to start from the pit lane after suffering issues before the formation lap, while Fernando Alonso also started from the pit lane.

Leclerc and Oliver Bearman were the only drivers to begin the Sprint on the soft compound tyres.

Russell Leads the Way

Russell made the perfect getaway to take the lead from Norris, while Antonelli moved ahead of Piastri into fourth.

Norris settled into second, initially keeping Russell within striking distance, with the gap sitting around 1.2 seconds in the early stages.

Behind them, Verstappen remained sixth, with Hamilton seventh and Gasly eighth.

Norris and Antonelli traded the fastest lap early in the Sprint, with Antonelli eventually setting a 1:14.000 before Norris responded.

Piastri quickly began closing in on Antonelli, while Antonelli himself was applying pressure to Leclerc ahead.

The top seven remained closely packed, with less than four seconds separating the leading drivers as the Sprint progressed.

However, Norri began to lose ground to Russell, with the McLaren's gap to the leader growing to more than three seconds. Verstappen also moved into DRS range of Piastri, briefly threatening the Australian's fifth-place position.

Leclerc Strikes

As the Sprint entered its second half, Norris began struggling with the rear of his McLaren, with a snap of oversteer further compromising his pace.

Leclerc seized the opportunity.

The Ferrari closed rapidly on Norris, with the gap falling to just 0.7 seconds before Leclerc moved to the inside and completed the overtake for second.

Norris dropped to third, while Antonelli began closing in on the McLaren.

With Norris no longer able to challenge Russell for the lead, the Mercedes driver extended his advantage, while Piastri's deficit continued to grow beyond five seconds.

Further back, Gasly fell more than 20 seconds behind Russell, while Perez remained well down the order after his troubled start.

Carlos Sainz was also instructed to box after being investigated for a starting procedure infringement after being deemed out of position.

Rain Arrives at Zandvoort

The conditions began to deteriorate as the Sprint approached its conclusion.

Rain was initially predicted for Lap 20, with McLaren team principal Andrea Stella warning the team that the risk was increasing.

The wind also picked up considerably, creating rapidly changing conditions around the Zandvoort circuit.

Despite the worsening weather, Russell maintained control at the front, with Leclerc and Norris unable to close the gap sufficiently to threaten the Mercedes.

Antonelli came close to overtaking Norris on the penultimate lap, but the McLaren held onto third.

Rain finally began falling on the final lap, adding another layer of drama to the closing stages.

Russell crossed the line to claim maximum Sprint points, with Leclerc finishing second and Norris completing the podium.

Antonelli secured fourth, followed by Piastri in fifth and Verstappen in sixth. Hamilton took seventh, while Gasly claimed the final point in eighth.
