On Lap 24 of the Dutch Grand Prix, the first of three safety cars was deployed when Lewis Hamilton crashed in Zandvoort.
The rain lightly began to come down, making the paint slippery on the side of the track which was partly being used on the racing line. Hamilton crashed into the wall after understeering and going wide at Turn 3.
Immediately after the crash, Hamilton confirmed he was OK and apologised to the team for the driver error.
In the media pen after his race, he spoke about the crash. Hamilton said: “I’m not really sure [what happened]. I will have to look back at it. As I went up the bank, the rear snapped out and I couldn’t recover.
"It was a bit twitchy, the car. I think we made real progress this weekend. My pace was looking pretty decent. I was catching George [Russell] and I think I had the pace of a few cars ahead of me.
"Very unusual to not finish a race and to go out so early, it's definitely not great but it is what it is."
Hamilton hasn’t had the most ideal start to his career in red. A disqualification in China at the beginning of the year and now two point-less races in a row make for an abnormal season for the seven-time World Champion.
Hamilton currently sits sixth in the drivers’ standings, 42 points behind his teammate Charles Leclerc above him in fifth. Leclerc also crashed out of the race after a collision with Kimi Antonelli. It's an unfortunate return from the summer break for Ferrari, but the homecoming in Monza next weekend could bring some much needed luck to the team.
