Ford is entering an LMDh car in the Hypercar class of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2027.
Ford has a long and impressive history in the WEC and at the Le Mans 24 Hours, like their iconic victory at the 1966 Le Mans 24 Hours with Ken Miles, Lloyd Ruby, Denny Hulme, Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon. The story of Ford's first victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours became the focal point of James Mangold's "Ford vs Ferrari" or "Le Mans '66" in some regions.
The iconic American manufacturer took four consecutive victories between 1966-1969 at Le Mans, battling Ferrari throughout those years. Bill Ford, the Executive Chairman of Ford, said: "I am thrilled that we’re going back to Le Mans and competing at the highest level of endurance racing. We are ready to once again challenge the world, and ‘go like hell!’”
“We are entering a new era for performance and racing at Ford. You can see it from what we’re doing on-road and off-road. When we race, we race to win."
With the announcement that Ford will join the WEC in 2027, there has been some speculation that they may also join the IMSA championship, however it seems that there are currently no plans to do so.
The re-addition of Ford will see the WEC adding yet another manufacturer to a growing list of the Hypercar manufacturers, with announcements over the past couple of seasons from both Aston Martin and Genesis, stating their own intent on joining the championship in both 2025 and 2026 respectively.
Ford have had a presence in the WEC paddock, competing in the LMGT3 class, as well as Ford competing in the GTD class in IMSA. Most recently, Ford took victory in the 24 Hours of Daytona in the IMSA championship, with the No.65 Ford squad claiming the victory, and the sister No.64 Ford car finishing in third place, completing a double podium.
The American manufacturer has previously announced a partnership with Red Bull Racing in the Formula One championship, which fits with their personal goals to get more involved in the motorsport scene.
The return of Ford will also pit them against their long-time rivals, Ferrari. The Italian manufacturer re-joined the WEC back in 2023 and found success almost instantly, taking both the 2023 and 2024 Le Mans 24 Hours', with the No.51 and No.50 crews. Ford's return will put the manufacturers up against each other once again, over 60 years since their duel in 1966.
There are currently no details on any driver line-ups or any other championships that Ford may compete in.
