On the first lap of the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, the final race to be held in the Netherlands for the foreseeable future, hometown hero Max Verstappen suffered a significant crash when approaching the start/finish line. The track, which had damp patches due to previous rain showers, had started to clear up however the persisting conditions remained a possible reason to catch drivers out.
Looking at the crash in detail, Verstappen touched a damp patch on approach to the final corner before losing control of his car. After the crash, a red flag was waved which brought to a halt on-track action as damage to the barriers was dealt with and Verstappen's Red Bull was returned to the pit-lane.
Speaking on the radio immediately after the crash, the Dutch driver confirmed to his race engineer that he was "OK". He was also able to exit his car without assistance, confirming that he was not injured.
Despite not having the best of weekends with the Red Bull seeming to lack competitive pace in comparison to the other front-runners such as McLaren and Mercedes, there is no doubt that Verstappen would have been hoping for a better showing in front of the Orange Army. Given his impressive track record at his home circuit in the past, including multiple pole positions and race wins, this will be a disappointing end for the Dutch driver.
Prior to the crash, Verstappen's race seemed to be in a difficult position. At the race start, Verstappen found himself battling with his teammate for this weekend, Liam Lawson, but emerged as the leading Red Bull on that occasion.
