Formula E in the USA: Where have they raced in the past?

Written by Teagan Crump, Edited by Vyas Ponnuri

Formula E and the United States have a lengthy and confusing past, with 17 E-Prix across the country, and a race in all but one season so far. The stage is set for a new American venue in 2026, as Formula E will visit a sixth new host circuit, the Miami International Autodrome.

Coincidentally, Formula E’s first stateside race was the Miami E-Prix in Season 1. In 2015, the race was held at the Biscayne Bay Street Circuit, located in Downtown Miami. The circuit was around the American Airlines Arena, home to the Miami Heat basketball team.

The inaugural race was won by Nicolas Prost, driving for e.dams Renault.

This was the first and only Formula E event at this location, with the race being cancelled after one year for “undisclosed reasons.”

However, Season 1 played host to another US race, the Long Beach E-Prix held in April of 2015. The track was an adapted version of IndyCar’s Grand Prix of Long Beach track, and the race was won by NEXTEV TCR’s Nelson Piquet Jr.

The Long Beach E-Prix remained on the Formula E calendar for Season 2, with Lucas di Grassi taking the victory for ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport.

After 2016, the Long Beach E-Prix was discontinued as a financial agreement to continue hosting the race was not reached.

Season 3 saw the first two of many E-Prix held in New York City. The debut of the Brooklyn Street Circuit created a new excitement and anticipation for the all-electric series.

The two races were won by Sam Bird, driving for DS Virgin Racing at the time, while Formula One race-winner Pierre Gasly too featured in his debut Formula E race at the time. The Frenchman finished fourth in the second of the New York races.

Bird also holds the record for the most Formula E race wins in New York, having three race wins.

The New York City E-Prix returned in Season 4 and served as the season finale. It was also the last event of the Gen1 Spark-Renault SRT_01E machine. The races were won by Lucas di Grassi for Audi and Jean-Éric Vergne driving for Techeetah-Renault.

Season 5 introduced the Spark SRT05e, the Gen2 Formula E machine, with the series remaining at the Brooklyn Street Circuit. Sébastien Buemi and Robin Frijns were the winners in 2019.

For the first time since 2015, there was no America-based E-Prix in Season 6 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The E-Prix was supposed to transition to be a single-header after Season 6’s race, but Formula E ultimately decided to keep it as a double-header for Season 7. Maximilian Günther won the first race of the weekend for Andretti-BMW, while Sam Bird’s third and final New York City E-Prix victory came in the second race of the weekend.

Season 8 saw the final New York City E-Prix and two pole-to-win race victories. Nick Cassidy, driving with Envision-Audi, won the first race of the weekend, while DS-Techeetah’s António Félix da Costa won the second. The first of those races witnessed torrential downpour, with several drivers aquaplaning at Turn 6, and the race stopped.

Following construction activity in the Red Hook neighbourhood, the race was moved to Portland International Raceway. Season 9 saw only a single race at the venue, won by Cassidy once again,

The Portland E-Prix returned in Season 10, and both races were won by António Félix da Costa. The Portland-based race was cancelled, though, after two race weekends, as Formula E sought to expand its US market, and believed that a race in Miami would be more appropriate.

In Season 12, Formula E made its debut at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. The event had a lot of anticipation behind it, with the series featuring “Evo Sessions” where celebrities drove the electric machinery. The first race back in Miami was won by Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein.

For 2026, Formula E moves to another new venue- the Miami International Autodrome. The track is an adapted version of Formula One’s Miami circuit and it surrounds the Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins.

This weekend’s E-Prix also features a Rookie Free Practice session, which you can read more about here:
