Zhou Guanyu’s recently announced move to Cadillac as their reserve driver reflects patience, technical credibility and apt timing, as the Chinese driver steps into a foundational role ahead of the team's 2026 F1 debut.

As the first full-time Chinese driver in Formula One, Zhou Guanyu carried the weight of a billion expectations on his shoulders. With the 2026 technical reset season, Guanyu has now transitioned from a reserve driver for Ferrari to the same role at the newly formed Cadillac F1 team.
Growth at Sauber
Guanyu’s tenure in F1 began with a point-scoring debut at the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix, a result that provided immediate validation for his promotion. He spent three seasons at Sauber, and developed a reputation for technical consistency and reliable feedback.
Valtteri Bottas, who partnered with him throughout his stint at Hinwil, observed this professional growth from the adjacent garage:
“Guanyu has been a fantastic teammate. He is incredibly hardworking, and his technical feedback has been vital for our development. He matured so much since his debut, and I’m genuinely happy to see him secure this opportunity with Cadillac. He deserves to be on the grid, and I think he’ll be a huge asset to a new project like that.”

The Chinese driver demonstrated an ability to handle high-pressure environments despite the lack of podium-contending machinery. However, as Sauber’s focus shifted toward the impending Audi takeover, the team’s development stalled, leaving Guanyu to frequently battle in the lower third of the standings.
“There were races where I felt I drove perfectly, absolute limit every corner, and we were still P17. It’s tough mentally. You know you’re better than the results show, but in F1, you are sometimes a prisoner to your machinery. I knew I needed a fresh start, a project where I could be part of the foundation.”
Why Cadillac chose Guanyu
For Michael Andretti and the Cadillac leadership, signing Guanyu was a decision rooted in engineering stability and global marketability. As a new entrant in a cost-cap environment, Cadillac requires a driver capable of providing mistake-free development and clear technical direction.
“Zhou brings a level of technical maturity and a work ethic that is exactly what we need as we build this project from the ground up,” explained Andretti.
“His experience over the last three years in a challenging midfield environment has hardened him as a racer.
“Beyond the obvious commercial significance, his ability to provide consistent, high-quality feedback is what secured him this seat. We aren’t just looking for a driver; we’re looking for a partner to help us establish the Cadillac brand at the front of the grid.”
This partnership is a tactical move for Cadillac as an iconic American manufacturer, a General Motors power unit and a driver with an established global following. For Guanyu, the move provides the first opportunity of his career to be part of a project with substantial upward mobility.

Into the 2026 reset
The 2026 regulations level the playing field for all competitors, and Guanyu’s integration into the Cadillac project during the build-up phase is intended to give him a head start. He enters this second act of his career no longer as a rookie trying to prove his belonging, but as a veteran tasked with ensuring the team avoids the typical growing pains of a new entrant.
Guanyu remarked: “Joining Cadillac is a dream scenario. It’s a legendary brand, and they are entering F1 with a ‘no compromise’ attitude.
“To be there at the start, to help build the culture and the car from day one, that is what I’ve been preparing for. I’m not here to be a passenger; I’m here to lead.”
From a pioneer to a team leader, Guanyu enters a new phase in his career. He finally has a platform to align his results with his professional ambition with the resources of a major manufacturer and a clean slate.
