Eriksson has penned a multi-year deal to join his Swiss counterpart, marking both Envision drivers signing deals to last into the upcoming Gen4 era in 2027. Eriksson replaces the departing Robin Frijns, who returned to the team ahead of Season 10 in 2024, serving as Buemi's teammate for two Formula E campaigns.

As for 27-year-old Eriksson, he has served as a reserve driver for Envision Racing through the Gen3 era, having stood in at two Berlin E-Prix rounds in 2024, when full-timers Buemi and Frijns undertook their endurance racing commitments. He would go on to score points in the second race of the weekend, keeping out of trouble to finish ninth in a chaotic race. The Swedish driver currently serves as the reserve for Jaguar as well.

Eriksson is no stranger to being a super sub, having first replaced Nico Müller at Dragon Penske in 2021, racing alongside Sérgio Sette Câmara for eight races. His debut race was the Puebla E-Prix in Mexico. Eriksson also secured his first Formula E point in London that year, finishing tenth in the second of the two races that weekend.

His racing pedigree remains strong, with runner-up finishes in the 2015 ADAC F4 Championship, 2017 European Formula 3 Championship and the F3 non-championship Macau Grand Prix in 2018, before a maiden Formula E test for his current team Envision Racing in Marrakesh later that year.

Eriksson also possesses experience in sportscar racing, having competed in the DTM Championship, while he has won races in the Nurburgring Endurance Series too, showcasing his versatility across the motor racing spectrum.

For the ten-time Formula E race starter, though, 2026 will mark his first full campaign in the electric racing series.

“I am delighted to have signed with Envision Racing, it is a huge moment in my career and one that I have been working towards for a while," Eriksson said, on his latest signing.

"I am very thankful to the team for their trust, and I can’t wait to get started for my first full season of Formula E.”

Envision Racing team principal Sylvain Filippi also spoke praises of Eriksson, highlighting his journey to a full race seat with the team.

"We are very excited to announce Joel as our newest driver. We have known Joel for a number of years now, going back to his first ever Formula E test with us, and racing for us last season in Berlin.

"On both occasions he proved to us how talented he is and adapted very quickly to the Formula E style of racing in Berlin, delivering points on debut.

"With Joel’s extensive knowledge and experience working on the simulator with Jaguar, we are confident that he will deliver for us, and we will be doing all we can to help him hit the ground running,” Filippi concluded.

Franz Jung, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Envision Racing, said, "We are very happy and proud to welcome Joel to Envision Racing. Joel impressed us last season in Berlin, and we are looking forward to building on this as he begins his new venture as a full-time driver."

With their line-up of Buemi and the newly signed Eriksson, Envision Racing become the second team to formally announce their line-up for Season 12, following Nissan's continuity in world champion Oliver Rowland and Norman Nato for the upcoming season.
