Nyck de Vries and Edoardo Mortara renew with Mahindra Racing for Gen4 after social media twist
Mahindra Racing become the third team to continue with their incumbent driver pairing into Season 13, with both Edoardo Mortara and Nyck de Vries staying at the Indian manufacturer as they head into the upcoming Gen4 era.
The duo have formed a cornerstone of Mahindra's rise in the Gen3 era, transforming the team's fortunes from backmarkers to a genuine front-running force on track.
The announcement was made on Tuesday morning, albeit in dramatic fashion, with sudden uncertainty over both drivers' futures building up when the team posted a video thanking both drivers for their success in the Gen3 era. This reel, co-posted by Mahindra and Mortara, sparked a tizzy over both drivers' futures in the team.
However, the team eventually announced the continuity of both drivers at the team, in a reel captioned, "You didn't really think we'd let them go, did you?" with a wink emoji, bringing relief to several well wishers and fans in the Formula E community.
Mortara joined the team from Maserati in 2024, and the upcoming season will mark his 10th in the championship. The Swiss driver has scored five podiums in Seasons 11 and 12, helping Mahindra finish fourth and third in the standings respectively.
He has also scored five pole positions for Mahindra, with four of them coming in the recently-concluded Season 12, forming a joint-record with double world champions Pascal Wehrlein and Jean-Éric Vergne.
“I’m really happy to continue with the team,” Mortara said, speaking on the announcement. “Our collaboration over the past three seasons has been very positive, with results steadily improving along the way.
Mortara has formed an immense part of Mahindra's rebuilding over the course of the Gen3 era, and looks ahead to the challenge of the upcoming Gen4 era of Formula E.
"Together, we’ve lifted our performance at every level, and I’m proud of what we’ve built. Entering my 10th Formula E season, we know the year ahead will be a real challenge, especially on the technical side, with so much that is new.
I’m curious and excited to take on that challenge with the team as we move to the new GEN4 cars,” he concluded, delighted to continue at the team.
His teammate de Vries also renews for another season at the team. Having joined Mahindra for a fresh start after a forgettable stint with AlphaTauri in Formula One in 2023, the Dutchman has brought his championship-winning experience and consistency to lift the team's performances.
He scored three podiums in Season 11, finishing ahead of teammate Mortara in the standings by four points, in what was Formula E's most evenly-matched driver pairing in 2025.
De Vries went one better in Season 12, though. Despite starting off slowly, he took victory on the streets of Monaco, delivering Mahindra their first victory in five years. de Vries also backed up his charge in the second half with a podium in Sanya, before winning again in Tokyo.
The Dutchman rounded out his season by taking pole in Mahindra's first front-row lockout, before finishing on the podium alongside teammate Mortara.
“The past three years with Mahindra Racing have been a very rewarding journey. We’ve made a lot of progress together, and finishing third in the Teams’ Championship last season was a great reward for all the hard work everyone across the team has put in," de Vries stated, looking back at the ground the team has made up over the last three campaigns.
I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved together and the direction we’ve been moving in. I’m very happy to continue with Mahindra Racing as we enter the GEN4 era. It represents a completely new challenge for everyone in Formula E, with a lot to learn and discover.
I’m excited to take that on with the team and see where this next chapter takes us,” de Vries concluded, looking ahead to what holds for the Gen4 era.
Both Mortara and de Vries have been actively involved in Mahindra's shakedowns of their Gen4 prototype. Despite the team's late confirmation to participate in the Gen4 era, both drivers and the Indian manufacturer remain optimistic of closing the ground and starting the season on the front foot, in the same manner they ended Formula E's Gen3 era.
