Team history - Andretti Formula E Team

Andretti Global is a name synonymous with American motorsport success, having won the esteemed Indianapolis 500 six times. But its less well-known branch is Andretti Formula E, a team which has also seen successes.

The team that we now know as Andretti was founded in 1993 by Gerald Forsythe and Barry Green as Forsythe/Green Racing and competed in the CART Indy Car World Series. Two years later, Green and his brother took over the team and renamed it Team Green.

2002 saw Michael Andretti purchase a stake in the team, and it was renamed to Andretti Green Racing. In 2009, the team became Andretti Autosport, following Michael Andretti's claiming full control of the team.

Andretti Autosport remained the team’s name until 2023, when the team were attempting to enter Formula One. The American name entered Formula E in 2023 by acquiring the assets of the erstwhile BMW team, who left the series at the end of Season 7.

Who’s driving for Andretti in Season 12?

The two drivers competing for the Andretti Formula E team in Season 12 are veteran Jake Dennis and rookie Felipe Drugovich.

Jake Dennis has been a prominent figure in Formula E since he made his debut with BMW i Andretti in the 2020- 2021 season. He claimed his maiden victory in only his sixth race, at the 2021 Valencia E-Prix.

He also claimed a victory at the London E-Prix, ultimately putting him in contention for the title in his rookie year. However, after a DNF in the final race of the season, Dennis failed to score the necessary points and finished third in the drivers’ standings.

For 2021- 2022, BMW and Andretti’s partnership ended, but Dennis remained with the team. During this season, Dennis struggled massively. He took one victory, at the London E-Prix. The London weekend helped him to gain valuable points and two positions in the drivers’ championship, ultimately earning him sixth place.

Season 9 saw a very positive shift for Jake Dennis and Andretti; not only did he sign a contract extension, but claimed two victories and a further nine podiums. His consistency through the season helped him to claim his maiden Formula E title.

In Season 10, Dennis attempted to defend his title. In the second race of Season 10, Dennis claimed victory and looked set to become a two-time champion. However, after a string of minimal points-scoring races, Dennis finished the season in seventh position, scoring over one hundred points less than the previous season.

Season 11 did not start positively for Jake Dennis. In the first three races, he only finished one. He suffered a retirement during the season opener in São Paulo and a non-finish in Jeddah. The rest of the season proved to be a struggle compared to the previous years — Dennis claimed only two podiums, but suffered another retirement in Berlin and a disqualification in Tokyo.

Brazil’s Felipe Drugovich made his Formula E debut in April 2023, first taking part in the Berlin rookie test with Maserati MSG Racing. He proved himself as a worthwhile competitor, finishing first and just two tenths slower than the best time of the Berlin E-Prix in Season 9.

He also drove in the rookie practice session at the Rome E-Prix and the 2024 Berlin rookie test, topping the timesheets in the former. Drugovich’s official race debut was with Mahindra Racing during the 2025 Berlin E-Prix, stepping in for Nyck de Vries.

During the first race of the weekend, Drugovich struggled significantly, following a drive-through penalty. He finished the race 17th. The second race of the weekend saw a late charge and Attack Mode for Drugovich, allowing him to claim his maiden points with seventh place.

Previously, Drugovich has served as Aston Martin Aramco F1 Team’s Test and Reserve Driver, as well as winning the 2022 FIA Formula Two championship title. Most recently, the Brazilian competed in IMSA with Cadillac Whelen in the GTP category and the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the same team, but instead in the Hypercar category.

The Andretti Formula E team is headed by Roger Griffiths, who has been involved with the all-electric series since Season 1. Additionally, he has a wealth of experience in many different disciplines, having developed cars and engines in Formula One, BTCC, American Le Mans Series, Rally Cross and IndyCar.

He has worked at Andretti since 2014, so he has built and developed a level of trust that is vital for the running of the team.

How did Andretti fare at Formula E pre-season testing?

Pre-season testing at Valencia proved to be successful for Andretti. Jake Dennis showed his experience by finishing in the top 10 in all of his sessions. Felipe Drugovich, being a rookie, continued to develop across the four days of testing and seemed to grow more and more confident in the Porsche 99X Electric.

Season 11 was a winless campaign for Andretti’s Formula E team. The drivers, Jake Dennis and Nico Müller, finished seventh and 15th in the final standings and suffered from a combined eight non-finishes.

While Dennis did manage two podiums, Müller could not follow his success, and their struggles may have been a contributing factor to the team’s seventh-place finish in the teams’ championship.

Some things to watch out for in 2025-26 are Jake Dennis’ form — will he be able to return to the glory of Season 9, or will he get a trilogy of seventh-place drivers’ championship standings? Additionally, will Felipe Drugovich be maintained for next season, or will Andretti hire yet another teammate for Jake Dennis in the Gen4 era?

A bold prediction for 2026 is that Drugovich will be the best-performing rookie and will potentially claim a podium.
