Last race weekend in Taupō was cut short due to dangerous weather upon the arrival of Cyclone Vaianu, which means extra racing this weekend in Christchurch with a Friday special.

A brand new race track ensures action for the whole field; equal opportunity for the rookies and the veterans alike, with no way of telling who will dominate Ruapuna Raceway.

Qualifying took place 2:15pm local time (NZST), with New Zealander Matthew Payne setting the fastest time with a 1:21.298 with Brodie Kostecki right behind him with a gap of 0.0308.

Behind the best of the field this Friday is fiery young guns Ryan Wood and Kai Allen, each showing their eagerness earlier this season.

Recap on racing on a Friday

As soon as the race began, it was pure chaos with Kostecki taking the lead with a clean start while Payne successfully held off Wood, aggression the theme for Christchurch's debut on the Supercars calendar.

In the back, major contact sparked start line drama between three cars - David Reynolds caught up in the contact between Brad Jones Racing teammates, Macauley Jones and Cameron Hill, on his 500th race.

Each BJR Toyota Supra gaining some serious damage, their garage busy at work to mend the race cars.

After a short misunderstanding with the timing system and track marshals, the field resuming their chase for the chequered flag a short time later all on Lap 1.

The second lap brought tamer action, wheels dropping off into the gravel and dirt as they each fight for positions.

Chaz Mostert found himself off the track on Lap 7, in the dirt and on the grass raising questions of some type of damage; ultimately caused by understeer, missing his brake markers entirely.

Ten laps in, Aaron Cameron was on the radio complaining his tyres were gone; not good intel for whats to come this weekend in Christchurch.

Finally mid race, the race rhythm was found, gaps were being created while battles were fought for the top ten - Broc Feeney and Zach Bates caught in a brief battle, the rest of the grid eagerly catching up.

Penrite Mustang No.20 was the first of the leaders to take a pit stop on Lap 17, with Allen coming in early with a two-tyre stop.

Lap 22, Wood and Kostecki fought it out, the championship leader in the No.17 Mustang holding off the No.2 Walkinshaw TWG Racing Toyota Supra; almost a repeat of Taupō's action, with Kostecki sticking his car everywhere to cover his younger competitor.

Lap 27, with just ten laps left of Race 10, Allen led by +1.565 ahead of Kostecki, with Wood roughly two seconds behind.

As the race approached the end, Kostecki began adding pressure to Allen, Wood following suit, the gaps all barely existent between the podium sitters.

While the sun prepared to set, with two laps left of the race, Kostecki continued to add immense pressure, sliding and giving young Allen a bit of breathing room as he approaches the end of the race, slowly pushing the gap between him and the hunters.

The last lap proved critical for Allen, the final chicane needing to be nailed to get the job done, Kostecki slowly falling behind on the south island of New Zealand.

Allen went on to fly past the chequered flag, winning his very first Supercars Championship race.

The Supercars paddock gear up to race again tomorrow (Saturday 18th April 2026) at 12:45pm and 4:10pm local time (NZST).
