Wehrlein's "perfect day" that saw ex-F1 driver snatch Formula E championship lead with one race to go

Pascal Wehrlein dominated proceedings in the penultimate round of the Formula E championship at London, rising to the top of the title with just one race remaining, and a five-point lead over Andretti's Jake Dennis. Wehrlein described his "perfect day" to DIVEBOMB after the race.

The German driver converted pole position into race victory, with some assistance from Porsche teammate, Nico Müller, who managed to defend from Jaguar's Mitch Evans early on into the race, allowing for Wehrlein to open a small gap, whilst conserving energy towards the end of the race.

Wehrlein then benefited from a well-timed Full Course Yellow due to Lola's Lucas Di Grassi hitting the barrier at Turn 8, the fast but tricky and narrow right-hander. The crash happened right in front of Wehrlein, and the FCY was deployed just after rival Evans had pitted. With Jake Dennis caught in a battle for second place behind, the German was able to take a comfortable race victory, which ensures that he now leads the championship going into the final race of the season.

Speaking to DIVEBOMB's Owen Bradley about his race and subsequent lead in the title fight, Wehrlein stated: "Perfect day, pole position and the race win. It was an important day to perform how we started, being competitive in the practice sessions, but also very strong in qualifying and the race, both cars up there, which was exactly what we needed.

He added: "Unfortunately, not lucky on Nico's side with the strategy to come in early with the full course yellow, otherwise I think we could have got a double podium today, that's what the team and Nico would have deserved. On my end, obviously lucky with that intervention and being able to box at that time. Good pace overall and now we focus on tomorrow."

Müller would get caught out by the FCY, amidst his battle with Mitch Evans. and eventually dropped outside of the points and finished in a disappointing 11th place. Porsche are now five points down on Jaguar in the Teams' Championship standings, with just one race remaining.

However, with the focus from Porsche's side being on Wehrlein's Drivers' championship hunt, Müller may have to drive defensively once again tomorrow, if there is a battle at the front with Dennis in contention. With Jaguar's Evans 21 points behind in the Drivers' championship, they may be able to prioritise scoring strong points to claim the Teams' championship, although, Evans will certainly be driving for himself on Sunday.

This result also means that Wehrlein goes from chasing Dennis in the championship standings, to now defending from the Briton with just one race remaining. Asked if the championship situation may change his approach to the final race, Wehrlein confidently stated: "No, I want to win tomorrow, win the race and ultimately then win the championship."

With just a five-point lead in the championship, Wehrlein still needs to ensure that he finishes ahead of Dennis, and not lose too many points to Mitch Evans, who is 21-points behind. However, with the pace shown throughout the London E-Prix weekend, the odds appear to be in Wehrlein's favour going into the championship finale.

The championship deciding final race around the streets of London takes place on Sunday at 15:05 local time, a race which will determine the 2026/27 Formula E World Champion between Porsche's Pascal Wehrlein, Andretti's Jake Dennis and Jaguar's Mitch Evans.
