Women have played an influential role throughout the history of motor racing. Many have taken to the wheels of motorsport machines, while numerous figures have worked tirelessly on the sidelines in various roles, shaping the racing world to the present day. Woman Spotlight Wednesday aims to take a look at the tales of these superwomen, who have surpassed various hurdles to reach where they are today.

At just 17 years old, Lotte van Drunen has cemented her place in motocross history, becoming the youngest rider to claim the WMX World Championship title.

Piloting her Yamaha to a 4-5 finish at the final round in Afyonkarahisar, Turkey, she clinched the title, marking a stunning rise through the ranks. This milestone, marked by her remarkable consistency, adaptability, and sheer determination, acts as irrefutable proof to her talent and perseverance.

Born and raised in Gorinchem, Netherlands, Lotte displayed an early passion for motocross. Lotte Van Drunen emerged as a prominent figure in the motocross world in 2018. She demonstrated exceptional talent by competing against male riders in the 65cc class at the FIM Junior Motocross World Championship, securing a commendable fourth-place finish.

Her impressive performance continued in 2019, culminating in a third-place finish before transitioning to the 85cc category.

In 2021, Van Drunen further solidified her position as a rising star by achieving a third-place finish in the European Championship EMX85 class, once again competing against male competitors.

Her ascent to the WMX Championship wasn't just about raw talent—it was built on years of dedication and competing against some of the best riders in Europe. The youngster made her debut after reaching the minimum age requirement of 15.

She first gained widespread attention with her outstanding performances in the EMX125 in and EMX250 championships, where she developed a reputation as one of the sport’s most exciting young talents.

Her notable performances in both championships laid the foundation for her later successes. These competitions honed her skills, pushing her to develop the technical expertise and adaptability needed at the world level.

Throughout the 2024 season, she dominated the WMX competition, her victory in Germany being a particular highlight. Racing against more experienced competitors, Lotte´s consistency, technical skill, and ability to perform under pressure made her a standout rider.

Her triumph in Turkey only sealed the deal, despite a tough field of competitors, Lotte’s ability to remain focused under pressure and adapt to varying track conditions set her apart, culminating in her crowning achievement at such a young age.

What makes Lotte’s story even more compelling is her role as an ambassador for young female riders. Partnering with Fox Racing and Yamaha, she’s become a beacon for women in motocross.

Through her tenacity and passion, she’s showing young athletes everywhere that it’s possible to excel in what has traditionally been a male-dominated sport. Her ability to blend technical skills with an unwavering competitive spirit has garnered her respect on and off the track.

In addition to her historic World Championship win, Lotte's rise in motocross circles extends far beyond her own achievements. She’s blazing a trail for the next generation of female riders, proving that success in motorsport is defined not by age or gender, but by passion and drive.

Lotte´s growth continued with her sensational debut on a Kawasaki. In her first race on the new bike, she won multiple races, reinforcing her adaptability and readiness for new challenges. Reflecting on this milestone, she shared, I've been here training a few weeks ago so I knew the track but it's amazing to win my first GP moto in my very first race for Kawasaki. I got the holeshot and could ride my own race. I'm so happy.”

In a sport as fiercely competitive as motocross, Lotte van Drunen has not only captured the WMX crown but also the attention and admiration of fans worldwide. As she continues to evolve as an athlete and a role model, she’s showing the world that the future of motocross is female—and it’s bright.

Looking ahead, Lotte´s career is set to continue its upward trajectory. With a WMX Championship title already under her belt, the motocross world eagerly awaits what's next for this rising star. Her journey is one of talent, drive and resilience and it's clear she's only just getting started.
