In 2024, the Australian raced in the F4 Indian Championship, where he took three race victories.
Most recently, the 20-year-old competed in the Ultimate Cup European Series - Hoosier Formula Cup, winning nine races and claiming an additional two podiums. He finished fourth in the standings with 296 points. In 2025, he also raced in the Indianapolis 6 Hours, which he won.
Hugh Barter currently serves as Lola Yamaha ABT's simulator test driver, assisting the team by providing them with invaluable data.
His plans for 2026 are yet to be announced.

Following the announcement, Hugh Barter said:
“It’s a privilege to continue to work with Lola Yamaha ABT on development for both the current Formula E car and the GEN4 car that will be competing from next season. Taking part in Rookie Free Practice is a great opportunity for me, and I’m looking forward to once again getting behind the wheel of the Lola T001 and translating everything we’ve achieved in the sim to the track.”
Team Principal of Lola Yamaha ABT, Mark Preston, added:
“We are very pleased that Hugh is returning to the track with Lola Yamaha ABT. He has provided invaluable feedback both in the sim and behind the wheel of the GEN4 car we are currently developing, so we look forward to getting additional input from him in Miami while giving him crucial development time on track.”
