Kimi Antonelli’s historic first podium in Formula One has been officially confirmed, after the FIA dismissed a protest filed by Red Bull Racing concerning Safety Car conduct in the closing stages of the Canadian Grand Prix.

The 18-year-old finished third in Montreal, rounding out a double podium for Mercedes behind race winner and team-mate George Russell. Antonelli had delivered a composed and commanding drive, holding off the McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris before the pair collided late in the race.

However, following the race, Red Bull submitted a protest claiming that Russell, driving car 63, had violated Article 55.5 of the FIA Sporting Regulations by braking “unnecessarily and erratically” under the Safety Car, and had breached Article 12.2.1m of the International Sporting Code by reporting Verstappen for overtaking under those same conditions.

In Decision Document 73, published on 16 June 2025 at 03:10 CET, the stewards ruled that Russell’s actions were justified. They found no erratic braking nor unsportsmanlike conduct:

”We accept the driver of Car 63’s explanation of the incident and are satisfied that he did not drive erratically by braking where he did or to the extent he did.”

”We are not satisfied that simply reporting to his team that Car 1 had overtaken that he engaged in unsportsmanlike conduct.”

As a result, the protest was rejected and the provisional classification upheld, ensuring Antonelli retains his third-place finish. The result cements Antonelli as the third-youngest driver in Formula One history to claim a podium, behind reigning World Champion Max Verstappen and Montreal native Lance Stroll. The Italian reached the milestone at 18 years, 9 months and 21 days - compared to Verstappen’s 18 years, 7 months and 15 days, and Stroll’s 18 years, 7 months and 27 days.

Antonelli’s confirmation is a triumph not only for the young driver but for Mercedes, who continue to show faith in their young talent. With the Austrian Grand Prix on the horizon, the Italian will be looking to carry momentum into the next round of the championship.

For now, Antonelli’s historic champagne moment in Montreal stands.
