'You can't beat a Monaco win': Mitch Evans discusses Berlin E-Prix victory and Monaco E-Prix

Mitch Evans is the Formula E driver with the most victories in the history of the all-electric series and he added to his record in Berlin after winning Race Two. He spoke to DIVEBOMB following his win.

In an unusual strategy, Evans deliberately drove slowly during qualifying starting in 17th. Combined with the eight minutes of Attack Mode available, the charge to the front was going to be a challenge but the New Zealand driver appeared to be pleased with his race.

"It went the way I was really hoping that it would go. Just being very patient at the start & waiting for the right time to do my first Attack. I left it very late but it was a clean Attack. We got to the lead for a six minute and then it was just trying to manage battery temperature and Oliver (Rowland) and Pascal (Wehrlein) they were on different strategies to me. Once it got to the lead I was quite comfortable but it took a long time to finally get there but it paid off in the end."

Pit Boost was a feature that was re-introduced to Race One, it majorly affected race strategy and how the raced played out. When asked about how much Pit Boost and Attack Mode strategies impacted his race, Evans said:

"A lot. When you had a pit stop yesterday you were kind of trying to target certain things- you start with the energy target. Today we started with a different energy target with no Pit Boost and also we had two Attacks of up to eight minutes where yesterday’s race just one six minute Attack, so that changed things so the approach is different. Today is a bit more of a traditional FE race from the past before we had Pit Boost. To get both right is not easy and luckily today we wanted to do the race as we did it and it paid off."

Formula E revealed the all-new GEN4 in November 2025 and drivers and teams have recently begun testing the machinery. Evans first tested the machinery during GEN1 and has witnessed all of the subsequent generations of cars.

"I’ve been here since GEN1 so I used to swap cars in the pitstop and all that." Evans recalled. "GEN2 was great and then obviously recently GEN3 so I’ve seen it pretty much from the start not quite the start because I came in Season 3 but yeah it keeps evolving, keeps getting more complicated for drivers and technically it’s a real challenge."

When discussing GEN4, Evans said: "Obviously we’ve got some good stuff coming next year with the GEN4 car. It’s evolved a lot and I kind of feel like it’s just the start of the championship. I think that from next year, people will start taking it even more seriously and so they should, you know. It’s going to be a real step up."

The Monaco E-Prix is next on the calendar and it holds special memories for the Jaguar driver, with him having won the race once and claimed a further three podiums in the principality. Motorsport wins in Monaco are notoriously prestigious, and Formula E is no different.

"You can’t beat a Monaco win." Stated Evans. "It’s just as simple as that, right? Unless it’s an Auckland or NZ win which will probably never happen- that would be pretty sweet. But a Monaco win is everyone’s dream as a driver. Berlin has been kind to me, I’ve won here three times now. They’re all equally important but Monaco has that little bit of special dust on it."

When asked where he would like to see Formula E race in the future, Evans said:

"Obviously I would love to have a race back in NZ or somewhere in Australasia- that would be great. A street race in Auckland- night race- I think would be epic. Dreams are free so we’ll see."
