Since the dawn of a new era in Formula 1, there has been one major talking point all around the F1 paddock - the porpoising phenomenon. Being the new ground-effect cars, teams are trying to run their car as low as possible to get maximum performance, and this has led to them facing the issue of porpoising, or bouncing, on their cars.
Most notably, the reigning Constructors Champions, Mercedes, has been affected the worst by the porpoising phenomenon, and drivers have stated that it could have adverse effects on their spines in the future.
In order to prevent the further intensification of the porpoising issue in the future, as well as ensure the safety of the drivers, the FIA discussed a wide range of measures with the teams in order to come up with the best possible solution, and narrowed it down to four changes for the 2023 F1 season:
A 25mm raising of the floor edges.
A raising of the underfloor diffuser throat.
The introduction of more stringent lateral floor deflection tests. The introduction of a more accurate sensor to help quantify aerodynamic oscillation.
Furthermore, in the aftermath of Zhou Guanyu’s horrific crash at Silverstone, the FIA aims to mandate changes to the roll-over hoop on the F1 cars for the 2023 F1 season.
