The No.27 Red Bull Team ABT Lamborghini car has topped the warmup for the Nürburgring 24h, after some cars (not including Lamborghini) have received a last minute change in the BoP (Balance of Performance).
This morning a few small alterations were made to the BoP, to try and bring the cars performances closer to each other.
The BMW and Mustangs have each lost 10kg of ballast, and the Mercedes' have lost 5kg. On the other end of the spectrum the Porsche's have each been given an extra 5kg. This does not come as a surprise as Porsche have won every NLS (Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie) race so far, and got pole yesterday with the No.911.
Four hours before the race start, the cars set to the track to break their drivers in before the 24 hour race. The No.63 car initially topped the timing tables at the hands of Dirk Müller, however right at the end the No.27 Lamborghini of Daniel Juncadella went faster with a time of 8:16.398.
Despite being fastest, the session wasn't without trouble for Lamborghini, as before setting the fastest lap, Juncadella had a moment as his car failed to make the Karussell and nearly hit the barrier.
The No.14 Mercedes of Maro Engel and the only BMW in the SP9 class, the No.98, also jumped ahead of the Ford in the dying minutes, although both more than a second back from the No.27.
The No.63 which led for most the session ended up finishing fourth, ahead of the pole sitter, the No.911 Porsche and the No.64 Ford
Although some fans may be upset that four of the cars to have benefited from BoP changes are in the top six, it is unlikely this is due to the affect of BoP. Most cars were only running race simulations, so one lap pace is not so representative.
Worryingly, the No.33 Falken Motorsports Porsche suffered a mechanical failure. Despite their pace, multiple Porsches have had problems over the weekend. This will be a concern to every team using one of the Germans cars, especially the Manthey crew who will start from pole with the No.911.
The race will start at 16:00 local time (14:00 GMT) this afternoon and can be watched via YouTube.
